Frank Ocean - Novacane

Frank Ocean is so dope. One of the only R&B artists i follow, thanks to OF. Really though, this guy is alot more than just a good hook and i REALLY can't wait to hear the work hes doing with Nas.

Loved the beat, loved his singing, but didn't feel the song.

Recently got put on to Frank Ocean when I heard the song Swim Good. Dude has crazy talent the Nostalgia tape is quality R&B from start to finish. Has big things ahead of him.

Ive been listening to Frank Ocean since the beginning of this year and i STILL cant get his EP out my deck!!! He's easily one of the most underrated people in MUSIC right now, and listening to this only reaffirms this, he's going places, mark my word

Everytime I play this EP I find something else I like. This song is a clssic, its been a long time since an R&B song has grabbed me like this. Frank Ocean is going to be huge.

Anyways, it's not an understatement when I say that I've spun "Nostalgia, Ultra" at least 100+ times since it's been out. On some days, it was the only thing I would listen to on a continuous loop. The music and aesthetics that are created from it our just incredible. His sound, and The Weeknd, are going to further define modern R&B, even more than artists likes Drake attempted to do with "So Far Gone" in 2009. It's okay to refer to him as an R&B artist. Frank Ocean is R&B. But it's also important to realize that in 2011, and in his case, that genre and packaging is completely redefined. Genre lines are blurring more and more each day. But mark my words, this is what "R&B" will start to sound more like. The cult-following Frank has acquired has been unbelievable.

He's "beefing" with Def Jam, because he's always been talented, but they kept him on the back burner while on their label, and he went out and did things on his own, and connected with Odd Future, coming up grassroots. Now that he's garnered a buzz, they want to capitalize on that for a re-release. It's a bittersweet idea, because you'd think they would have gave him a chance from jump street, but then again, labels are BUSINESSES and they need to know you can make them money, and be marketable. Either way, I hope Frank embraces the newfound support now, even in a weird Lupe Fiasco/Atlantic Records type way, and uses the label funding, marketing and promotion to his advantage. It's not selling out when you've came and made all this beautiful audio art on your own, and your label comes to YOU, not wanting to change it, but simply get behind it and let it continue naturally. "Novacane" isn't your traditional radio single nowadays, but note that it's receiving top 40 radio play everywhere. This could be a great shift for the music industry and how artists looks at labels, in correlation with creating grassroots movements, etc.

As for the song, it's a 5-star classic that will hopefully be around for a long time. This is Frank Ocean's "Best I Ever Had", in the sense of it being from a mixtape, and gaining radio play and massive buzz. I hope it allows him to take off this year.

Frank's plane took off a few weeks ago and it won't be landing anytime soon.

And forget genre titles for artists - just enjoy the quality of their material and forget about putting them in a box.

I truly dig Lonny Breaux's method of detailing one word emotions. Novocane is that joint that you just want to hear while staring at a reverberating speaker.

Frank Ocean is free gold. I'm just pissed you guys picked one of his worst best songs. If your gonna pick a song off his ep to get people to like him post one of his best songs. Which would be either "swim good" or "American wedding". If your not a Frank Ocean fan either one of those songs will MAKE YOU ONE!!

Been a fan of dude for a while now, Dope songwriting capabilities and creativity with mixing genres/sounds. Great choice for a single. This will reach a broad audience.

The beat is hot but I had trouble following the song. What's he actually singing about? He kind of lost me half way through until the Novacane chorus... then I got lost again.... I think I need a few more listens to really appreciate.

@DJLiveWire, The way I see it, Frank is using Novocain metaphorically to numb the pain of heartache, since Novocain (Yes, this is the real way to spell it.) is a numbing medication commonly used by dentists. As a matter of fact, the girl he's referring to in the song is a pornstar who is aspiring to become a dentist. That would explain why she mixed Novocain in whatever they're smoking. Anyways, genius this track is genius, classic.
