YP - Something in Me
Producer: Emmaculate
Album: Next Up Mixtape
Label: Universal Republic
The 167th entry in our DJBooth.net Freestyle Series comes courtesy of YP, the Chi-town native previously heard on Maja 7th‘s Dance With the Devil. On his brand new, exclusive Something in Me freestyle, the currently-unsigned emcee flows over original boardwork by Emmaculate. In addition to promoting his recently-released Next Up mixtape, YP is preparing to drop another yet-untitled street album with DJ RTC and RubyHornet.com, which will be followed by the the mid-to-late summer arrival of his sophomore full-length, Mirrors.
Readers can download a copy of In the Booth (Volume 4), featuring exclusive freestyles 91 through 120, here! Volumes one, two and three are available for download here, here and here. Watch for Volume 5 to hit our front page in late May.

YP had been in the Booth once before, but I felt that was enough in order to extend an invite to him for the Series. His flow is consistent throughout, though at times it could have used more energy, and works well over the original production selection by Emmaculate.
The hook was a nice touch, but I always listen for the DJBooth incorporation and YP made us proud. |

DUDE!!!! WHO IS THIS?!!! i will def. keep my eye out for him. when his voice meets the beat, i can remember my days of driving from the southside of chicago. down lake shore, on my way downtown. as the scenery changes. so does a person's drive to do more. to wanna live better. have better things. yp we feel u son! if dude keeps it up. i can see him as the future "voice of chicago's hustle".

YP put a good effort into this freestyle. I have heard better and I have heard worse. This guy is a nice happy median. Loved the verses on this one and the hook was nice as well. Would like to hear more material from this guy before I decide whether or not his mixtape is worth a listen when it comes out.
Production was real smooth. Definitely a track I could relax to. Looking forward to hearing more. |

Good song... er... I mean freestyle!! Production is right down my alley. Not overly impressed with rhymes but he certainly keeps it interesting enough with his strong delivery. Rotation-Stuff!

Can I take a quick pause to shout out our graphics guys Ohms on the pic for this freestyle? Sweet baby jesus that's a sick visuals.
Back to the music. Like a lot of our freestyles, this is a real opportunity for me to realize just how talented YP really is. This flow's as solid as a bag of bricks. Well done sir, well done. |

5 stars if he adds some energy/emotion. Not to say his rhymes are emotionless because he's got some deep stuff here just the delivery could use some work. He's a great writer, and he has a nice voice for this industry. Keep it up!

The production is nice. Sample in it is nice. YP comes hard on this, smooth flow and wordplay.

I like this kid. However I feel he doesn't go consisten all the way through and doesn't use all the energy at times. Hook is swell and the dude spits good verses over the beat. Just need a lil bit more effort to raise the bar though.

Definitely something to feed my ol school soul, but the beat was more than the artist although yp did bring his own.

Sounds more like an original song than a Freestyle, but I'm diggin' the soulful feel of this.

I felt this could of been better if he would of expressed more agression. I think his voice is just naturally laid-back so it still sounds good on this type of boardwork. Pretty hot freestyle!

I really like the beat. The sample was used welll. I like when the artist incorporates the words in the sample with their rap. It really brings the sample and song together. I like the delivery of the rap too. Nice shout out to DJ Booth too. Good work YP, can't wait to here more.
