The 158th entry in our DJBooth.net Freestyle Series comes courtesy of Young Scolla, the Detroit native who recently brought us mixtape leak Gimme a Sign. Scolla is currently hard at work on his DJBooth/Refinedhype/Rocksmith-sponsored Potluck mixtape, set to drop in late May.
Update: Check out Scolla’s new video for Venting!
Readers can download a copy of In the Booth (Volume 4), featuring exclusive freestyles 91 through 120, here! Volumes one, two and three are available for download here, here and here. Watch for Volume 5 to hit our front page in late May.

I've been waiting for someone to rock some old Dipset beat and Scolla did the damn thing. While I cannot deny that I appreciate the 'Z' shout out, my rating is purely based on flow, talent level, and overall skill.
Better late than never, right Scolla? Just kidding, ha. It was well worth the wait. |

Its alright, seems too original though. I think the beat should've been different though. Its like my man dr. dre says, you can't flow with "dipset" beat if you're not gonna rap hard.

Jealousy! One of my favorite juel beats right here. Scolla did not disappoint. He did his thing. It's in rotation.

Even before I hit play I knew I was going to be able to relate to a track called "Venting." And I am very happy to report that Young Scolla did not disappoint at all. Definitely laid down some sick verses on this one.
"It's like I'm in a black hole when sh*t sucks." Who can't relate to that. The entire record is just full of great word play and some classic analogies. One of the things I look for in a song is how much I can relate, and this is one of those ones that is high up there. Keep it coming Scolla. |

Scolla spits some hard rhymes but raps laid back which sounds tight over the Jealousy beat.
"I stay high but a ni**a still grounded." |

Scolla, without a doubt after hearing this, is now on my radar. This freestyle was sick. Lots of energy and it's good to see the freestyle series up and running again.
Regardless of how brief this was, Scolla has some bars and wordplay, so I'm gonna give this a solid 3.5. |

I dunno if it's the beat or what, but Scolla reminds me of a waaaaaaay doper Cam'ron on this. He comes correct, never sounds like hes freestylin or tryin too hard and that outro was a nice touch.

I'm rating solely on the freestyle itself rather than the beat seeing thats what the series is about...I love the worldplay and metaphors he brings to the table, great voice also. Can't get much better, but I can't give it a CLASSIC rating just because i didn't jump out of my seat when i heard it...

Great...everybody vents but dang rarely does somebody do it with that much skill.
The flow is great, wordplay is tight everything just comes together on this one. |

This freestyle has a very smooth delivery. The guitar beat allows Scolla's voice to just cruise this song very easily. Each lyric compliment's the one before. He doesn't try and fit lyrics into places they don't belong. It's a good quick spit that people have been waiting for, can"t wait for his next.

Loving the original beat used...it's so smooth and kinda makes me feel I'm on the beach on an exotic island with the breeze blowing just relaxing. Everything Scolla did on this freestyle was right and I guess his way of "Venting" is rapping flawlessly while in the booth. Nothing negative to say on this for once but it's only just a freestyle!

Winner of the night. Laid back spitting, with enough aggression without losing the listener's attention. Liking the wordplay.

A very "calm, cool & collective" type of track (if that makes any sense??)
Point is, In-rotation! |

instantly the beat sounds personal like hes going all in for his personal self.
the flow plays of himself leads up from line to line. freestyle is on point it has a direction and doesnt waver much from that path. its good major playback but in order for me to give it a banger status its gotta compare too royce the 5'9 im mee freestyle which was indeed Epic. 3 stars |

Good ol' vintage dipset beats. Young Scolla delivers on the mic, and rides the beat, what more could you ask from a freestyle?

Nice beat selection that goes well with his smooth laid-back delivery, but the struggle-driven rhymes grips listener's attention tightly. Job well done!

The opinion I'm about to delivery isn't a bias one at all, Since we represent Scolla everyone would think that we would just always agree w/ his music, but I actually respect his creativity & uniqueness by giving him his space to make his own decision w/ the direction of his music & just support it to the fullest. But when I heard this "Venting" freestyle that I had been on him about doing for the last 2 months I was reassured once again about why we got behind him as an artist. Scolla delivery is always on point, their always realness in his personal life and life lesson in his music. In the trying times that we are all face w/ in this world today Scolla brings hope to his listeners who are stuck in that dark place looking for a way out. We are missing a lot of leaders in this world today, music is also taking a hit to the commercial media titans that now control it but this is another pure reason to support a young artist that is passionate about his craft... This freestyle touch me when I heard it, it's def in rotation and the public has spoke so i'll give it a 4.5 if I could but 5 still I cant. Cause its that dope

Wow this song completely illustrates why I love the new wave of hip-hop artists. A rapper describing when he cries?!?! I can't even imagine a mainstream artist contemplate about saying that a few years ago. And even today, rappers like lil wayne don't cry, they just have tatoos that do it for them. Seriously tho, this track is straight fire, and I love the fact that Scolla spills his heart out on this slow yet catchy beat. I can't wait to hear more from him

I definitely appreciate the depth of the lyrics here, the smooth beat and just the easiness of the flow. I know I have said this with a lot of people, but I expect to hear more from him in the future.

"A big f**k you to whoever don't understand me and look for me to be different that any man I can be..."
Amen brother. Well delivered smooth, and intense, this is a great one that's backed up by a simple, effective, and somewhat somber beat. @RLTskillz, I got the same relaxed breezy feeling. Right on. @dubs1270, you're absolutely right. It's respectable to see a man comfortable enough with himself to approach themes that the big names shy away from. I got my eye on you Scolla. |

I'd like to hear what he has to say on a brighter note. |

The beat was sick and his flow was dope on this track but I didn't really feel it even though its a free style & he's just 'venting'.

Press Play. Eyes Closed. Vibe with the Ride.
I think Scolla handled the beat incredibly well, never faltering, and taking his listeners on a cruise control drive pointing out the scenery he paints as he turns over his thoughts effortlessly. |
