Young Scolla - Gimme a Sign
Artist: Young Scolla
Producer: Big Soji & Young Scolla
Album: Potluck
Label: Fab 5 ENT/USR
A potluck is a gathering of people where each person or group of people contributes a dish of food to be shared among the group. While I can’t take credit for that definition (thanks Bing), the word itself can be easily applied to Young Scolla’s new Gimme a Sign. This figurative melting pot of creativity finds Scolla and his collaborators, Boaz and S.Money, giving a clear indication of their talents as they lace an eclectic beat (co-produced by the headliner and Big Soji) with rhymes centered around the more somber parts of everyday life: “I know that loss is just another learned lesson, that’s why I need a sign to know that I’ve made progression.” If this satisfied your musical appetite, be sure to check out the Benzi-hosted and DJBooth/Refined Hype/Rocksmith-sponsored Potluck mixtape, dropping May 21st.

another sample woo didn't expect that haha i make myself laugh...haha obama on the bill...this negro haha hell na...this song is straight...it seems a little sloppy and gimmie a sign reminds me off x's version...which was way beter than this...the beat is just a sample...a kick...and a open hi hat and a hi hat...not that interesting...

Scolla's execution is great on this one, and the soft but continuous melody compliments him well.
As far as what he's actually saying on the track, it just didn't feel genuine...almost like he felt obligated to put out a record that shows more of his personal side. |

Not bad, but not really good either. The lyrics are pretty decent, but I wasn't feeling the guy on the third verse at all.

No no no I dont like beats like these...normally but damn I gotta say this is nice,
“im on the road to succes approach my destination....did I do everthing right, idk for sure but I did it my way” I like his this is me imma do it through my approach technique is nice. Chorus is call out for direction to the most high is a nce touch and really potrays the ideals of this song very well. Wow im really diggin this song it has depth and meaning too it, surprised that its reall cuttin home too me and its something of a inspirational song id have for those key moments in life. I was really diggins S. Money a lot with his gritty delivery and stang flow. The ending with the beat gives you time to reflect and think so I like that a lot too over all I give it 3 spins(3.5) its a track in time of self awarness but not something id listen too everyday PS: dj booth i think its time you add a 3.5 and 4.5 only to the ratings optioins with many songs falling into those catigories |

Scolla is the standout emcee on this track. Boaz and S. Money are not bad at all, but Scolla's vocals just demand your attention while the other two emcees are merely along for the ride.
We are hosting "Potluck" so I am bias, but we all need more of this in our headphones. |

The sample on this is cool and all of the artists come correct but something is lacking on this one to really make it hit home(maybe the hook). Still diggin it, but this could have been a banger.

I'm not sure why, but for some reason I'm just not feeling this track. I can't seem to find one thing that makes me not like it so much, but for some reason?

This is definitely the kind of record to set off the anticipation for Scolla's next project. These cats did a great job

Don't get me wrong the track is solid and everything, but I doubt I will play this again voluntarily. i also think his lyrics are being forced and a hip hop song should never feel forced, because the versatility of hip hop allows an artist to be himself and be real, and i don't get that vibe here at all. So in an effort to keep it real, I can't possibly put this in rotation.

It's alright. The beat and melody were good, so were the lyrics. I'm just not feeling it.

the title "Gimme a Sign" made me reminisce at DMX failed attempt at a comeback and looking to GOD to guide him through his turmoil. i guess this track is saying the same thing bar the "comeback". this is gospel-ish HipHop at its best. gettin its message across with minum fuss and a beat that does overshadow the message. but if i were to look at it purely in terms of Rap, i would say that the delivery was a bit dull. you could sleep listening to this. in that respect this joint failed. its a 3.5

I like its content because thats missing so often in music these days... But that being said I'd like to here more from the first rapper on the track. The others were Okay. The music itself had a good sample, but I would have liked to hear more changes in it. Some more variation.

I'll quote Z "Scolla is the standout emcee on this track. Boaz and S. Money are not bad at all, but Scolla's vocals just demand your attention while the other two emcees are merely along for the ride."
The meaning behind this track is dope also. |

I definitely would have liked to see a little more from the beat...I understand this was a really introspective track and the vocals were the focus but honestly it got boring to me after a while.
I do like what Scolla tried to do on this track though. Lyrically he wasnt bad. |

The hook has potential to do big things with the sample for DMX's "Lord Give Me A Sign" but it kinda fell short for me...maybe because DMX had so much energy and feeling in his version. The background voices are a plus...and the highlight of this track is Scolla who spits some nice bars..."No lie I'ma give you the Sojourner Truth"...and the featured guests did their thang as well.

The beat is 10/10. Scolla is ALWAYS 10/10. The hook is money. The other two dudes really suited the beat and added their own elements of spice to the proceedings.
Good work, fellas! |

I actually really like this track. I love the soulful, introspective music. That's like...my zone. Great track. I feel like the features maybe coulda done more lyrically, but none of them were wack in the least bit.

This is the kind of song that speaks to the common man and the frustration with life that we all feel. I was paying attention from the get-go.
The beat exemplifies this perfectly. It's somber- you get that sense with the female-sounding voice that is woven into the background and seems to be crying out in supplication. That could have been really annoying if not done right, but it's at just the right volume, and adds character to the beat without being overbearing. I felt that the vocals were excellent and flowed nicely, although they can get a little cluttered with background singers. Just say what you wanna say, and use your own voice without the cluttered backup vocals. So minus one star. Definitely check it out. |

This is the type of song that needs to be carried by dope lyrics. Unfortunately none of the verses really blow me away and the chorus seems really forced and not fluid. Its a shame too cause I feel like this could have worked really well.
You can tell the song is suppose to be deep and touching, but it just misses the mark. Yea gets a point across but that more because of the mood the song gives off than anything else. The production is right for the song but the lyrics are not quite there. Its an Okay song but it had the potential to be much better. |

Young Scolla has been coming up with good music track after track. Soulful production with heartfelt lyrics that are as well thought-out as they are smoothly delivered.

Beat is weak and simple. Has an inspirational message and that makes it good. It's a good rotation song, but not much more than that. I respect the song though, good job.

jus play the beat and u have a hit regardless. vocals were mixed sloppy, but hip hoppish gritty sound actually goes hard on the vocals. In rotation.
