After hearing Young Scolla‘s Booth debut, If I Was With You (featured back in summer ‘09), readers could be forgiven for assuming that the Detroit up-and-comer was an R&B singer who could rap but, in reality, he’s more of an emcee with a damned good singing voice – which is kind of like arguing over whether a zebra is black with white stripes or white with black stripes. In any case, those who want to hear Scolla on a pure hip-hop track need look no further than Get By, the first leak off his latest EP. Here, Rhode Island native Tecknowledgy serves up a laid-back, soul-sampled instrumental as the emcee delivers his motivational verses, mixing reflections on the artistic grind with mellow braggadocio and concluding, “In due time I’ll get mine for real; as long as I grind till the casket drops I’m gonna be big time.” Sure to be a hit among listeners with a taste for retro-informed grooves and positive-minded rhymes, Get By can be found on Scolla’s Escaping Reality EP, released January 1 and available now online.

Production was a lil slow to get started at first, but it built up to somethin soulful and old school, Lovin the whole feel of the track. I could throw this in rotation and then some.

It's hard to go wrong with a Naughty by Nature reference, but I understand what people are saying. There's always a fine line between chill and boring, and Get By is right on the line. Ultimately I'll bump it to three stars because of Scolla's solid rhymes.

Like the lyrics and vibe on this song, but just a lil something missing, the production is Very smooth tho! Good piece overall. Rotation fa sho!
