Young Scolla - Apart
Artist: Young Scolla
Producer: Rodney Hazard & TEP Tracks
Album: Unreleased
Label: Fab 5 ENT/USR
The last we heard from Detroit fast riser and DJBooth Freestyle alum Young Scolla we were left wondering what was good enough to make the final cut of his upcoming album Tears & Triumph if the Booth approved Stare wasn’t. Well, today I’m excited to say we still don’t know the answer! Ok, so maybe that’s not so exciting, but luckily Scolla’s new record, Apart, which also didn’t make the final cut, is. Produced by TEP Tracks and Rodney Hazard (also known as one-half of The Marvelous World of Color), Apart finds Scolla getting Drake-ish, both dropping some impeccable rhymes about a relationship strained by distance – “The Cinderella tale, I thought you knew the story / I hope I ain’t jeopardize it in pursuit of glory” – and contributing some impressively smooth vocals on the hook. Damn, I didn’t know he was a dual threat like that. We know Scolla can make dope records, so if this isn’t good enough, how dope can we expect Tears & Triumphs, dropping right here on DJBooth “soon,” to be? You’ll just have to keep it locked to find out.

Now THIS is how you roll out a record that is good enough to make a project but didn't. People think that single leaks kill album buzz. Nope, sorry. You know what kills the buzz of an album? Crappy pre-release leaks, which were never intended to make the cut in the first place. So, why not strategically roll them out to the public (the internet) if eventually they'll hear them one day anyways? Exactly.
Kudos, Scolla. A talented artist with a great business sense. Artist, take notes. |

If this is'nt good enough for the album, then I can't imagine what the rest of it sounds like. The smooth vocals, and the equally smooth beat make this really refreshing.

If this isn't good enough to make "Tears & Triumphs" Scolla has one helluva project on deck.

I couldn't be more impressed by this. Maybe I'm slow (probably) but I had no idea the dude could sing like that as well. If you're a betting man, the smart money says that Tears & Triumphs is going to be a hell of an album, and it will likely have at least one hit. The anticipation builds...
