YC the Cynic - Summertime High
Artist: YC the Cynic
Producer: J. Free
Album: The Spectacle
Label: Unsigned
Is it Opposite Day or something? Uh… never mind; I’m pretty sure there’s no possibility of getting a straight answer to that question. The point I’m getting around to is that Bronx up-and-comer YC The Cynic may want to think about changing his stage name to “YC The Optimist,” because his latest single, Summertime High, is about as far from “bitterly or sneeringly distrustful, contemptuous, or pessimistic” as it gets – in fact, it’s pretty damned upbeat. Backed by the sun-drenched, lushly-arranged soul-sample production of J Free, this “new summer anthem” finds the man who brought us Say Superman celebrating everything that’s wonderful about warm weather: lemonade, leisurely drives through the city streets, lazy days spent at the beach and (especially) beautiful, half-dressed females. Has this head-noddable track brightened your day? Well then, keep it locked – YC the Cynic’s latest street album, The Spectacle, isn’t set to drop till fall, but we’ll be sure to bring you all the latest in the meantime.

Artists always like to remind us media folk not to label their work, but it seems to be that the exception is when they drop self-described "summer anthems." While YC's new Booth feature is in no way an anthemic-type record, it does fit the season very well.

I enjoyed the vibe of the track a lot, but it reminded me of a couple things. YC's soft vocals and laid pack flow reminded me of the poetry-esque verses of Digable Planets back in the day (whom I happen to love). The main melody of the production reminded me of something out of a Super Mario video game. So, having reminded me of fond childhood memories, I must give this chill track rotation.

This beat is dope and YC sounds pretty cool. Not quite "say superman" but its up there.

In order for this to truly become a summertime anthem I feel like YC needs to put a little more energy into his vocals - I like the chilled out vibe, but his rhymes are just a bit too subdued. Unless of course you're spending your summer incredibly high, in which case this track probably sounds amazing.

This is cool. I really like the production. I feel like dude could have come a little stronger though. I lose his voice in the beat half the time. His presence just isn't there for me.

I feel like I'm in a city bar with everyone just talking and laughing, very nice prod but I agree he coulda come a lil louder & harder.

This is a 4 star banger for sure. Type of track to play at a bbq. I like that YC is real young but his style is reminiscent of de la or tribe.
