YahZarah - Why Dontcha Call Me No More
Artist: YahZarah
Producer: Nicolay and Phonte [for The Foreign Exchange Music]
Album: The Ballad of Purple St. James
Label: Unsigned
Does a song about heartbreak have to sound like as much of a downer as the experience itself? YahZarah, the NYC soul singer previously glimpsed on the hook of Camp Lo‘s Regulate, thinks not, judging by this album inclusion, her first solo feature. Here, the driving, ‘80s-informed boardwork of co-producers Nicolay and Phonte sets an incongruously upbeat (but undeniably infectious) mood as YahZarah asks her soon-to-be-former fella “Why Dontcha Call Me Anymore?,” painfully aware that the answer to that question involves another woman. Ultimately, she bids the man in question adieu without hesitation, voicing a sentiment that anyone who’s experienced a similarly rude romantic awakening will be able to relate to: “I hope you’re happy or whatever… on second thought, not really.” YahZarah’s spirited vocals, along with the compulsively body-moving beat, make this track hard to resist – the talk-box guitar solo on the back end is just icing on the cake. Those who like what they’re hearing can find more on The Ballad of Purple St. James, scheduled to hit stores and online retailers May 4.

That 80's style production is really tight. YahZarah sounds like a singer with something new to bring to the industry (this is my first listen of her). She has a pretty unique sound. I'm likin this.

I had to relax and let this one play for a minute before I could get into it, but once I did it was one. The rock-ish production is pretty fresh, and Yah sounds like a mix between Janelle Monae and Fantasia. Just plain enjoyable music.

I've had my eye on her for a while, through her affiliation with Little Brother and a few other geust features (check out her album as well it's dope). But the image of her now gives me the creeps and makes me dread the fact that they're tryna make her into some sort of a popstar. She represents pure underground soul not pop! And i gotta say i aint feelin this new Yahzahrah so much... in rotation though

Dope beat! Crisp live instrumentation with trademark Nicolay's spacey synthesizer melodies... 3.5

I love the production, with the drums and percussion in the background. Her voice blends in great with the song. She is not over doing it or anything it's very good.
