Xzibit - Phenom
Artist: Xzibit
Featuring: Kurupt , Big Bad 40 (40 Glocc)
Producer: Rising Sun
Album: MMX
Label: Open Bar Entertainment/EMI
A blue moon, a total eclipse, the sighting of a black swan, all rare and noteworthy events. But the return of veteran emcee Xzibit to rap after four years spent pimping rides, acting and being the butt of countless “Yo Dawg” jokes? Now that is a Phenomenon you’d be lucky to glimpse once in a lifetime. With the release of the official lead single off his long-awaited MMX LP (due out later this year), X to the Z makes his comeback official. Here, the simmering synth arpeggios and strings of producer Rising Sun set a suitably street-ready mood as the artist informs us just how serious he is about once again taking over the game: “Move out the path of the lava, move in position to conquer / You have created a monster, wake up and crawl out the coffin…” Backing him up are two equally hard-bitten cohorts – fellow Left Coaster Kurupt and Texan emcee 40 Glocc jump on board to offer some moral support on the guest tip. Is this single, well, phenomenal enough to stir up the buzz Xzibit needs? If you think so, be sure to cop the download when it hits iTunes next Tuesday, May 25.

X to the Z has always been one of my favorite west coast artists and not just because of the Z in his name (seriously, you need to believe me). It has been a while since last we heard from X (besides two seemingly random features over the past few years), but I am ready to welcome him back with open ears.
The production on display here is perfectly suited for X's big vocals and powerful delivery, but I am disappointed in his choice of guest features. This should have been a solo ride and not a carpool. Other than that nitpick, bring on the album! |

Xzibit is one of those rappers that has tons of songs in my Ipod. Kind of like DMX, I never really realize how many songs of his I have until I take a look. A few years back his songs were hot fire and that wasn't just luck, the man is talented.
The boardwork is spot on for a X song, has a bit of computer feel to it yet has a strong and steady bass beat. Not sure why there was other people "featured" on this track, I feel like I could have done what they did...for a lot less. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to an X comeback, the West Coast needs some life support. |

If X rode solo on this one I would of claimed this a banger but the other two flop. If he's gonna do features bring in some of his more famous west coast friends. Production is on target possible rotation song.

Decent track from Xzibit here. The production is good, though X usually picks more banging production then this. To the verses. Xzibit was good, though like Z I would of prefered him rolling solo on this instead of having the unnecessary guest features.

Sadly a whole generation of kids grew up thinking that X was only the dude from Pimp My Ride, and that's a damn shame. Ask his rap peers and you'll find that the man's got nothing but respect in the game. Great to hear that distinctively deep voice over a west coast banger, especially with some more mature but still hard lyrics. Ride out to this.

Yeah I like this a lot maybe 3 1/2 stars. I agree the production fits xzibits big vocals. My boy can go hard with the lyrics too. Can't wait for the album.

Mr. X to the Z Xzibit coming through with another solid track. I can honestly say that he had the best verse on the entire track. "Hurt Locker" had that gritty aggressive feeling and this record in comparison to that isn't too far behind.
Not a big fan of the guest features, but damn, Xzibit just reminded he was more than just that guy who showed up at the front door to pimp rides. Wasn't expecting this and as the track ends I am walking away very pleased with the resulting outcome. Shout outs were annoying though. Guest features were non-existant. |

Haven't heard from X in a while. He was alright nothing special. Liking the Westcoast feel on this one. Kurupt was alright, but didn't really feel Glocc's part.

after "hurt locker" dropped i had high hopes of some more dope tracks to come not long afterwards, a few months later ive forgotten almost but then phenom hits the booth new songs page! very similar flow and beat to hurt locker which is a really good thing. kurupt and 40 glocc were average but really unnecessary

I didn’t like this at first but then I started to get into it, but I do think Xzbit needs to switch up to gain mass appeal.

I have always been an X fan. I just wish that he could carry an entire album. I like this song. Not big on the features. X doesn't disappoint.

I like the production with synths and layered claps. X to the Z goes hard, features were a distraction but the strength of the lyrics carry it somewhat to rotation.
