After playing the Clark Kent role for years, one of the brightest new-comers in the game, XV, now thinks he’s Superman. Ok, fine. So I have yet to find any concrete evidence of my claim, but his new song SmallVille is a pretty damn strong indicator. With a legion of fans clicking on anything with J. Cole’s name attached, Vizzy’s sure to get some additional looks by flowing over a smoothly produced Cole instrumental that samples the Smashing Pumpkins (specifically To Forgive, for those sample heads out there). On the mic the Kansas emcee dips into the more serious material in his arsenal, working in the occasional hot punchline but primarily concentrating on the kind of open honesty that has earned him so many loyal listeners in the booth. SmallVille has high replay value, and is sure to turn non-believers towards the Vizzy Zone, so be on the lookout for Zero Heroes, an as-yet mysterious project set to be released before XV’s major label debut that he promises will be “REALLY special.” You’ll just have to keep it locked for more details.

I've always thought XV was a stronger emcee (more dynamic) when he selected mid-to-up tempo production to spit over (this isn't hard when you work with Seven), but on "SmallVille," which is down-tempo and somber he excels. Showing the ability to make convincing music, no matter the tempo or tone, will only continue to help XV as he moves forward.

Z nailed it. This track is a great indication that when Vizzy's major label debut finally drops it might be a lot deeper and darker than we might have expected otherwise. Now, about this mystery project....

What a professional and great debut for XV's major label release. So proud of what the dude has accomplished over the years and excited for the future. This record was indeed deep but I love the fact XV will still stick to his formula and give listeners a sound they're not used to hearing. Fire.

@ KenAkaTheWG, J.Cole didn’t have a verse. Did you even listen to the song?

XV did a great job here, that first verse was something else. J.Cole’s production was on point, much better than I had hoped.

Still not convinced that the XV hype is justified but this track is nice, Cole's production is on point.

I saw this collab and that it was 2 of my top 5 favorite artists right now and literally said "F--- Yes." Different than I expected for sure and disappointed that Cole didnt verse but the production and everything here is just perfect. This is the perfect rap rock fusion for me I really love this and other rock fusions Vizzy goes on (see Losing the Signal), which coincidentally Losing the Signal is the song that really got me into XV. We all have different tastes but all I can say is that this song is special to me and I really and truely love it. For me this song will always be a classic.

Didn't know J. Cole was producing for other artists. Either way XV is the perfect one for this beat. Not really what XV usually does....this is a little more calm than his usual tracks but he does it surprisingly well this time.

Not my favorite Cole production. But XV's rhymes have me really excited to hear his debut. I can relate with a lot of the stuff he's saying.

I was actually getting worried. After 3 years of straight fire from XV, he started 2011 really rocky. Personally, I didn't like his rapping lately. But he came back in Smallville. This may not be XV at his best, but he is getting back there.

Beat is sick. J. Cole is always reliable in that department.
