Wyclef Jean - We Made It
Artist: Wyclef Jean
Producer: The Runners
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: Refugee Republic
We Made It—sounds pretty upbeat, right? Well, not exactly…Though Wyclef Jean‘s enjoyed a long and successful musical career, he’s well aware that countless less fortunate individuals are struggling to survive in poverty and violence-stricken locales worldwide, and this new buzz single is colored by that realization. Croaking bleakly quotable lines like “Everybody wanna be Scarface, but nobody wanna die….” over production team The Runners’ bare, chopped guitar chords and ghostly background vocals, the emcee/singer flips a reggae groove into something akin to ragged, fire-and-brimstone blues. Mid-verse, the instrumental veers into more traditional hip-hop territory, backing Wyclef’s ominous lyricism with buzzing synths that build to a sweeping, but still very eerie chorus. Bracing, creative, and eccentrically catchy, this ‘street anthem’ is sure to fulfill its intended purpose and leave listeners buzzing about the Fugees alumnus’ forthcoming, untitled LP (due out sometime this year). Watch for Wyclef’s other recently-released buzz single, Timbaland collabo More Bottles, to hit our front page tomorrow.

Very interesting that he was featured tonight, as well as the Black Eyed Peas. If you follow Wyclef on Twitter, earlier last week he was random at the airport and asked this girl for some cookies. He was tweeting us as this was happening. So she is looking at him crazy and what not, and then he stands there and smiles for a little while and then she all of a sudden starts screaming. She has realized who he is! She gives him a cookie and says "OMG, OMG, I loved you on that My Humps song! LOL!
Hahahaha. So classic. So then she asks for his autograph. He signs as Wyclef Jean and starts walking away. When she looks down at the signature, she runs after him trying to get her cookie back, saying "Gimme my cookie back...I thought you was somebody famous". LOL. Man, that was such a random story, but I just had to tell it, cuz it was so funny on the Twitter. Now...to the song: This is some definite heartfelt ish. I'm loving it. Definitely feeling it. Realest ish ever wrote: Everybody wanna be Scarface, but no one wanna die" A lot of boring minded heads on here won't feel this, but this is real, true life music. Almost classic status. |

Wyclef is one of my favorite artists because he brings music that people can relate to. This was a solid all around song. 3.5, can't wait until the album.

That is a damn shame M.H. Wyclef is a le@end. This son@ is one of the best I have heard from him lately, cause I must admit I haven't been connectin with alot of his latest stuff. But this is deep and soulful.

The message on this song is the focal point for me. Many couldn't deliver the goods here like Clef. Personally, I am more excited about his "Pop Bottles" record w/ Timbo, which will go live Tuesday evening.

I heard this yesterday along with 'Pop Bottles' and I've gotta say both are very impressive, although very different. I love the smooth reggae vibe here and it has a cool message to go along with it, vintage Wyclef at his finest.
I also tend to give the edge to 'Pop Bottles' though. That record will be solid with a retro Timbo beat and - (wait, I'll save my review for tomorrow). |

I love this right here. It kinda reminds me of Bob Marley. I'm a big fan of the older reggae. The beat is dope and Wyclef does his thing on this. 5 stars no doubt

Laughing at Young Son's comment cause I was Just telling him about that.
I'm really lovin this track tho! The feel is real nice, and it keeps you wanting more as you listen to it. Wyclef always comes with the classic status flow, something most artists cannot do these days. He is one of my favorite artists because of his creativity. I'm going to work hard to eventually have the opportunity to produce some tracks for him. Nice production by The Runners, as always...have to show them some love on this one. Banger!!! |

I could neva hate on this refugee, or any of them for that matter. Wyclef is always on top of the social commentary, and this track had a great message. I liked the production, but I kinda wish it would have stayed slightly more on the reggae side. The track is still hot tho.

Its a decent song, though I cant see Wyclef (even though I am a fan of his) being able to get his way back up to the top of the charts with either of the tracks he released this week.

Lyrical awesomeness. Mad respect for the socially-aware lyrics, mixed with the clear flavour of CLASSIC street anthem!
