Having treated fans to the DJBooth underground hits How We Roll and Bay’d Out (with Mistah F.A.B. and Clyde Carson), “Bay to the A” rapper Willie Joe brings forth another buzz single from his upcoming debut album, The Come Up. What’s different about Get On It, however, is that it is his most hyphy-sounding buzz joint to date. Whispered verses, a crazy-sounding hook, and Traxamillion‘s minimalist production help give Willie Joe another “Bay to the A” hit, with Get On It having slightly more ‘Bay’ than ‘A’ appeal. The Come Up will make its way into stores and online retailers this summer.
I don't remember hearing of Willie Joe before; but this track is decent. I like the beat on it. The whole feel of the song says The Whisper Song; but then the chorus comes on and changes it up. I think the flow is just OK. Nothing really special here. It would bump in the wip and in the club though; so I will throw it in rotation...
I would really like to hear someone incorporate A-Town swagger and Bay Area funk into one song. It seems like Willie Joe is trying to go one way or the other, without compromising either. It's fair, but lets get musically risky. It's worth the try.
