Wes Fif - Hometeam
Artist: Wes Fif
Featuring: Big K.R.I.T , CyHi The Prynce , Go Dreamer
Producer: Phoenix
Album: TBD
Label: Street Smart Music
In today’s game, geographical boundaries are blurrier than ever, and artists tend to choose influences and collaborators without regard to regional loyalties. As great as it is to see rappers expanding their horizons, though, there’s something uniquely dope about hearing several of a region’s freshest talents get together and ”...do it for the Hometeam.” On his latest single, Orlando representative Wes Fif gathers a few of the Dirty South’s best and brightest for a no-holds-barred showcase of mic skills. Backed by producer Phoenix’ street-ready synth-stabs and hi-hat-heavy percussion, Fif, Meridian phenom Big K.R.I.T., G.O.O.D.-signed ATLien CyHi Da Prynce and Hollyweerd member Dreamer drop verses packed from top to bottom with dope flows, hot lines, and did I mention dope flows? While the highlight of the record, for me, was learning that it’s possible to rhyme “Van Gogh” with “sandals,” I’ll let our resident Southern-rap lovers cast the final ballot on who came out on top. Whatever your take on the matter, you’ll want to keep it locked for details on Fif’s forthcoming project, which has yet to receive a title or release date.

I've seen Wes Fif's career path ebb and flow over the past 6 years, dating back to the days when I was spinning records at mixshow for my college radio station. For a period of time, I felt like Fif lost a sense of direction with his music. Whatever the sound of the moment was... he tried it. Now, though, he sounds refreshed. It could be a maturation process, a solid selection of collaborators, or experience in the game. Not sure, but "Hometeam" is as solid a record I've heard from the emcee in a minute.

I thought Wes dug himself into a hole by getting such an all star lineup to possibly overshadow him, but I was actually impressed. Different sound than the others and he held his own.

It's the classic dilemma. If you're an up and coming artist getting larger emcees on your track can bring more attention to you, but you always risk getting overshadowed. In this case I think it paid off for Wes - I'll have this on repeat at least a few more times.

Wes sounds confused as to the direction he wanted to take this track in.
