On Booth debut, Music and Liquor, SoCal representative Wax spit a brutally honest chronicle of his struggles with the bottle, earning high reader praise for both his skills and his realness. Well, I’ve got good news and bad news. Bad news: nothing’s changed since we met him back in October. Good news… well, actually, that’s the good news, too. Making its world premiere right here in the Booth, new single Red finds him as frustrated, f*cked-up and defiantly fresh as before. EOM once again mans the boards, cooking up a sparse, haunting beat fueled by Far-Eastern samples as Wax fills us in on his conflicted mindstate. Beginning with the announcement, “My future’s never been bright nor clear, so I don’t wear shades, I just buy more beer,” the emcee proceeds to drop three solid verses’ worth of the most cynically intelligent lyricism I’ve heard in a minute. As bitterly refreshing as a good Pinot Noir, this cut and much more can be found on Wax’s DJBooth-sponsored Scrublife mixtape, scheduled to hit our mixtape page sometime in late February/early March.

The Arabian? influenced production is interesting, but it takes a back seat to Wax and his sometimes outrageous punch lines. Wax reminds me of another talented emcee by the name of Bekay. I am not sure if he is going for shock value with his rhymes, or if he is really an off-the-wall type of emcee, but either way his work is an intriguing and entertaining listen.

How much I'd feel a track like this depends a little on the mood I'm in, but regardless, I don't think there's a question that Wax is a hell of an emcee. After Red there's no way you won't at least take a quick listen to his other songs, and in that sense the track absolutely accomplishes its mission.

The W.G. .. myspace or facebook it but Big Wax and i kinda started together..not together together..just at the same time..i was 15 at the time and there was this little competition called Vibe Verses..i was too young to win but i entered anyway... im envious hes making it before me...but he'll have his time..hopefully ill have mine too.. good job dude im proud |
