Hip-hop has never been a game for the meek, even if they will inherit the Earth, so when DJBooth newcomer WarrenJae proclaims just seconds into new release Our Season, making its worldwide premiere right here, right now, that he’s a king and his fitted is his crown, the South Carolina native is continuing in a proud rap tradition of braggadocio. While an intro like that may have you expecting a Southern banger, Our Season is anything but as producer Sam King crafts an uptempo, subtly soulful and horn laced beat that uses Blue States’ Season Song as its hook. It’s a nice beat, but as always it’s the rhymes that take center stage as Warren details just how far he’s come, and how much further he has to go: “Don’t worry about what I do, worry about what I dream.” So how about it Booth? Is this young emcee’s music well seasoned? I apologize, that was a terrible pun. More importantly WarrenJae’s upcoming mixtape, The Dream Catcher, drops via DJBooth on May 11. Until then keep it locked for another premiere, coming next week.
