Wale - Workin'
Artist: Wale
Producer: Yogi
Album: Unreleased
Label: Board Administration/MMG/Warner Bros.
On a day when a long list of powerhouse artists grace the DJBooth’s homepage together (think of the new Miami Heat), a solo effort from Mr. Folarin has also emerged for your listening pleasure. Wale’s latest effort, his first real solo feature after a relative hiatus, is the quickly paced Workin’, a track that tells listeners exactly what Mr. No Days Off has actually been up to since his debut album took off (hint: he’s talking about a more lavish style of work). UK producer Yogi puts down a heavy rock, club-ready beat for Wale to describe his latest self-proclaimed accolades - “If you call me a genius, nobody would disagree” – and the end result is a banging cut that should have Wale fans clamoring for more new work from the man. Speaking of which, while Workin’ is not on Wale’s forthcoming Seinfeld-inspired sequel project, the aloofly titled More About Nothing, the upcoming mixtape should prove to be more than worthy of a good listen if this is one of its throwaway tracks. We’ll find out for sure on August 3.

I feel bad not knowing that Wale has been MIA on the net for the past 2 months... but if this is how he wants to return - fine by me.
I am looking forward to this new mixtape, but I wish there was more of a push on his debut. There were 2-3 more records ready to be pushed as singles. |

Tightt beat, Wale has a good flow and a lot of potential. He just needs to use it.

I been listening to Wale for a while now and I know he can do better than this. I think people see Wale as over confident, because he hasn’t achieved much yet.

You can measure this track two ways - against Wale's other work, or against most rappers work. For Wale, this is a good but not great track. For most rappers, this would be one of the greatest of their lives.
Can Wale regroup and still be a force despite his debut album's disappointing performance? We'll see. |

Wale is capable of more. Give this beat to someone who is not.
