“That’s tight, but who’s Wail?” That was the question from a blaspheming pedestrian who overheard me checking out Wale’s new cut Letter, featuring vocal samples from John Mayer‘s track 3x5. But before I started to get mad, I took a deep breath and remembered that the D.C. native just might have slipped under some people’s radar (especially those who think Wasted is the best track of ’09). He is a chameleon in the music industry, with a laid back style and a countless array of rhyme schemes who’s been featured on countless tracks showcasing his talents this year alone; and unlike Wayne, who often embarrasses his counterparts on a track, Wale actually makes the other artists better. Letter is no exception, as Wale uses production from phenom Mark Ronson and bluesman John Mayer’s harmonious refrain to share deep and topical thoughts with icons of his generation, including Pac and our current president. Letter was left off of Wale’s upcoming album Attention: Deficit, and if the unreleased material’s this good, I can only imagine how dope the album will be.

John Mayer works well here but honestly he is completely and totally forgettable. If his name wasn't on here I don't know that anyone would care who the singer contribution was by. On another note I love the realness here and its a pretty nice lil track.

To quote the great Sig (above): "Letter was left off of Wale’s upcoming album Attention: Deficit, and if the unreleased material’s this good, I can only imagine how dope the album will be."

Exactly... 11/3 people!

Lovin the chilled out production from Ronson. The John Mayer sample was a nice touch & Wale came with a nice flow.

Wow Dre, someone's a John Mayer hater. I won't front, I like he man's work - that track he did off Alicia Key's last album was amazing.

But the story here is obviously Wale's flow, damn. The man can come with a complex political flow as easily as he can do Pretty Girls. If he doesn't become one of the biggest rappers in the game in the next few years than I don't know anything.

Another Wale feature and just another joint-that-should-have-made-it-to Attention Deficit. Over a beautiful drum pattern by Mark Ronson, Wale showcases his storytelling range. Loving the John Mayer's vocal sample as hook.

Wale's "Attention Deficit" is going to be like the first album in 2009 that I'm going to blindly purchase, that is, skipping through the part 'I illegally downloaded it before I legally purchased it'.

Sales won’t reflect it, but I believe Wale’s album will do good things for rap.

If someone doesn't know who Wale is then they have to have been living under a rock for at least a few years. He was even on that MTV award show (all I remember was some Brit saying something about him because he was on the side stage in between the performances and whatnot.)

Anyway, this song is great, imo. John Mayer's vocal sample and Wale amazingly mix well together.

4/5

Nice fusion of alternative rock and hip-hop, by the end of the song you wouldn't know your listening to a rapper

Incredibly tight. I don't cop many albums or music at all anymore but attention: deficit is a must buy. This ain't even on it? dayum. production and sample just make this an amazing song. So chill. Wale's rhymes are on point, but then I've never heard him off.

This track is just cool. i love the smooth jazz samples and the suble acoustic production on this. Featuring John Mayer on this was brillient, it only further cements the fact that he has such wide versatility to almost any genre of music. this is an automatic 4 stars easy.

This track is tight but I don't know how Wale's album will turn out.
His last mixtape and singles sound much different from previous mixtapes.
Eager to find out what approach he takes to his album.

Wasted IS the best track of '09. Hater.

Wale is good ish. However, he sounds like Kanye and Kid Cudi at the same time. It's easy to not know who he is.

John mayer was very normal, anyone could have got on the track and did that, but that aside, wale did it well and this is a great song.

Wale was exactly right, p all people want are club songs now days. We need artists like Pac you can be as lyrical as you want but you'll never be a great without lyrics that actually matter and 1 of the only artists out doing that is Nas.

Wale talks about a very sentimental subject to him on this song and i love that... i love that he talked about Tupac's legacy in it and concluding in saying that we will miss u forever and a day... i do not however feel that this is a song that people will be able to branch out to everyday i think though that u have to show respect to Wale for covering the things he did and for being as inventive ashe is in this song... whic is y i gave it 4 stars

"Centerpiece of my entire culture", "From an African-American stance", and "impact on our race". I don't agree with Wale's generalizations (his premises which are fundamentally fallacious and flawed). I represent myself (my actions, feelings, perception are not indicative of someone else); assume the same perspective and see yourself from an individual standpoint (and confer and convey it that way), instead of a collective one.

Two stars for the subject matter and approach.

You all should know that Rhymefest has a version of this song as well as Wale. Both couldn't clear the John Mayer sample. Both are/were(?) involved with Allido so there has been interest in this specific situation as it could be lowkey industry discrepancies causing both versions of this song to be unreleased...
