Vonnegutt - Going Home
Artist: Vonnegutt
Producer: Simon Illa
Album: Falling Up The Stairs
Label: AVJ Records/Purple Ribbon
Hip-hop bands can be musical artistry or just a straight up hot mess. Our readers know we don’t even bother with the latter, so we (like, totally dude) won’t plague your ears with any Shop Boyz this week. Instead, we will focus on a band that offers a fresh take on the hip-hop industry. Vonnegutt, the project of front man Kyle Lucas (a Freestyle Series Alum) and guitarist Neil Garrard has been gaining momentum in the South and is continuing to break out into the wider world with their latest single, Going Home. Lucas lays down consistent originality on the bars while the band pushes forward with a more pop focus this time around, lacing upbeat drums and guitar riffs with a nice production background from Simon Illa. The Dungeon Family has definitely found a new creative outlet for their associates, and it seems like only a matter of time before the rest of hip-hop nation catches on. If you liked this catchy medley, be sure to keep a lookout for Free .99, their upcoming album dropping December 30.

Hip-Pop, Urb-Rock, Genre-bending music... call it whatever you want, but when you're done trying to categorize the new Vonnegutt single, you might want to just listen a second time to enjoy it free of boxed-in thoughts. Lucas is adept as rolling with whatever production backs him, both in his solo work and a a member of the band, and he showcases this skill over Illa's radio-ready production work.
I don't know about you, but I am a fan. |

As B.o.B., Bruno Mars etc. has shown, if you really want to take that next step into the spotlight, this kind of rock/hip-hop/pop is the way to go. Only time will tell if this really catches on, but the potential's absolutely there.

I saw this guys at Lollapalooza this summer, they're crazy good and they have Big Boi as their Execuive Producer.

Like this. Starting to find more and more aritsts and groups venturing into the hip-pop genre. This could definitely be a growing trend in the future.

I think i see a new B.o.B. right here. But im not gonna speak to soon. This is a great record. The production isnt that great, but the chorus makes up for that. A banger.

Really catchy track, but i'm not digging the verses that much. These guy's have so much potential, it would be a waste of talent if they just go down the route of 'generic, bubblegum *hip-pop*' with all of their music.

Each verse is real dope. Beat is a little too techno for me, but not so much that it kills the song.
