Last we heard from US Virgin Islands producer/singer/rapper Verse, he was courting various major-label offers. Though Jive was the front-runner early on, Verse ultimately decided to ink a deal with Interscope for the release of his debut album, Stories of a Bachelor. When you’re releasing a project on a major, label pressure generally results in a number of records being left on the cutting room floor; if you take a good listen to Buy You A Round (Up & Down), however, noting Verse’s smooth vocals, the song’s female appeal, and Meco The Great‘s synth-heavy beat, you’ll likely end up scratching your head, wondering, “How did THAT get cut?!” The answer is simple: the records that made it onto Stories of a Bachelor‘s tracklist are just that much hotter. They second half of a hook has a great bounce and vibe to it, and the song is very catchy. The production compliments nicely and sounds very mainstream. Not anything I would listen to too much, but its good and catchy enough for rotation. We'll see what else comes out of this album if this catchy track was cut...

Those synths are off the chain and it makes the song energetic and catchy. Hook is solid and his vocals are good. I can throw it in rotation..

Oooooo, this one is smokin'. Im gonna footnote everyone else that posted by saying the production is flame, he has mad talent, and the second part of the chorus is way better than the first.
Looks like I need to start that Summer playlist a little earlier than I thought. |

What?! This is FRESH people!!! The SURPRISE of the night!
And this is also the night when I don’t agree with anyone: what do you mean you don’t like the “first half” of the chorus? It’s called a pre-chorus and it does what it’s supposed to: build up! This is catchy but on a very distinctive level: production is classy with a fresh percussion pattern to provide the tempo, and the creative/dynamic melody provided by pleasant vocals (and rapping? What?) matches perfectly! @ Z, sorry my man, 5* to me will always mean: “no flaws in my eyes”, not necessarily “classic”! ;) |

Verse has the vocals to make any record catchy - sorta like R. Kelly (who could create a record about baking muffin tops and sell singles).
What I was worried about with this record, however, is the generic content. In the end, though, its really about enjoyment. Topical issues aside, this one can spin in my set any day of the week.

well the beggining threw me off, i was ready to shut it off, but then it jumped into a completly different feel, very catchy, very enjoyable.. this song deserves to get mainstream play

This song has a really catchy production, I'm loving it coz it's cheerful and puts me in a good mood. His vocals are cool. The only thing which disappoints me a lil is the melody, it's decent but not that good. The hook is cool but I hate it how he repeats Up & Down, it's annoying. In rotation!

I wasnt feeling it at first. Then I caught myself singin along with the hook. Now I'm really feelin it. I also agree with DJ Z about the generic content. But all around it is too enjoyable to dislike this track.

"If you're a single lady let me buy you a 'round" As a club DJ let me tell you many guys will be quoting this line in the club trying to prove their baller status to females. Very catchy, good tempo, good song for the warm weather party months.

I agree with Patty about the repitition of "Up and Down" Normally I like repitition in a song, but the melody of that part wasn't good enough to repeat. Like KD, I wasn't into it at first, but liked it more as it went on. Overall it was good, but seemed to be missing something. I would have liked to hear the production have a some hard hitting dancehall drums (It may have been there, but my headphones suck). 3.5 stars.
