U-N-I - Return ft. Talib Kweli
Artist: U-N-I
Featuring: Talib Kweli
Producer: Lee Bannon
Album: Mick Boogie Presents: Before There Was Love Mixtape
Label: Unsigned
Though Drake‘s Weezy-featuring Ransom took the throne as our listeners’ pick for 2008’s Best Hip-Hop Song (Unsigned/Underground), SoCal duo U-N-I won over DJBooth staff with the lyrically-driven Beautiful Day. Now, Thurzday and Y-O Return to the Booth with their first feature of ‘09, a mixtape cut that finds them teaming up with conscious rap superstar Talib Kweli. With a music-box intro that quickly melts into a sea of hazy synths, Lee Bannon‘s narcotic beat sets the stage for a freeform lyrical feast. Talib’s verse on the back end brings some extra energy to this spacey cut, and will likely be seen as Return‘s high point, but the chilled-out confidence Y-O and Thurzday bring to the table can’t be overlooked. For more of U-N-I’s low-key, old-school sounds, listeners can download their brand new, Mick Boogie-presented Before There Was Love mixtape here. Fans should check back with us in late February, when the duo step into the Booth for an exclusive interview with our own DJ Z.

This beat begins as FIRE... it loses some steam as it goes, but these dudes know how to rhyme and keep any song interesting... I really like what these cats are doin out of the west-side, and with the "blacksmith" holdin down the last verse this ends up being a solid east/west coast collabo...

My guys U-N-I have been bringing it for a few years now. The production is simple and soulfully dope. They are super ill BECAUSE they are different and aren't afraid to be that. I really commend that.
Talib came real smooth. He's been bringing it lately! DJZ, y'all gotta get that "Homecoming Freestyle" with him and John Forte up here. It was official. |

U-N-I have true talent!
I love their delivery, that hook, the sing alongs, bs-less lyrics… it all sounds natural and meant to be, plus very well harmonized with the beat. Love the beat transitions (1:47)! Talib honors hip hop! |

Talib is a great emcee, but he was the least impressive on this joint. I spoke with U-N-I's people today and unbelievably, this song was completed just three days ago - right before Mick dropped the mixtape.
Great job, fellas. |

First off feeling that beat Dr. Dre might sound good on a remix. Pretty good lyrics like "Ease her head like aspirin." Like Talib on this joint always been a big fan of his and his style.
