TRUTHLiVE - Catalyst for Change
Artist: TRUTHLiVE
Producer: Jake One
Album: Patience
Label: Interdependent Media
The word “change” has gotten heavy use from the media in recent years, whether it’s being applied to Obama’s big plans or to a certain sports icon’s vows to battle his sexual addiction (Eldrick, you and I both know it isn’t a disease). While I don’t know if TRUTHLiVE can swing a 7 iron with such ease, his latest track Catalyst for Change will have just as many jaws dropping. Collaborating with the always talented producer Jake One (and equally impressive guest artists Ras Kass and Finale) LiVE glides over the hauntingly smooth production with ease, bringing his ideas for change along with him. If you liked this track, be sure to check out his latest project, Patience (out tomorrow), and if you can’t wait that long hit up his The Unlearning EP, hosted by DJBooth.

Absolutely love the production on this one - the slow progression and eerie tinge really work well. I love how TRUTH makes the poetry reference to his rhymes in the first verse, but not so sure about the Lil' Wayne crack...be careful, T.

Anytime that Jake One agrees to produce an entire project you know that the artist has some talent. More than that, and on display here, Truth doesn't try to do too much. He takes the beat and just goes. I guess you could say he drives the speed limit so to speak.

First thing first, that production really helped keep my attention. Don't wanna sound rude, but I wasn't really feeling the verses on this one.
Hook could really use some work too. I'm not about to call this a bad track , so I'll go with the next best thing which is just Ok. |

Hard to rate this thing, the production has its ups and downs, the flow meshes well and the lyrics are decent so 2.5 rounding up.

I don't really like this all that much. The production is pretty good, but I didn't feel like TRUTHLiVE had a lot of enthusiasm with his verses. It could just be me though.

If I'm not mistaking Jake One produces practically all of Freeway's tracks too...but yeah this beat is alright it's simple but smooth in a way as to not outshine each artist. All three artists are able to show us what they got because the production doesn't take over the track. They all do a good job at what they do best which is rap.

The beat was too distracting for me to pay attention to anything else. The verses salvaged this one from the trash but even on multiple listens I just can't get past the beat.

The simplistic beat really fit well here. And the verses were fresh as well. Nicely done!

This song starts off really lame and it doesn't get much better. Uninteresting lyrics anybody can make a production like this.

All three delivers some well-crafted verses, and Jake One provides a simple yet effective beat that does it’s job and shines light to the words, nothing more nothing less. Rotation-Stuff!

Wow, I was immediately feeling the beat on this one. The pulsing bass adds to the brooding and intense atmosphere, with the ole school little bells to lighten things up a bit.
However, the hook was not a good place to start. It lacks any energy, and I would call it just plain boring. @ASB, it's not just you. I agree that there was energy lacking in those verses. You hit the nail on the head. This is the kind of song that makes great background music, because the beat is thumpin and expressive. Unfortunately, the vocals don't match the beat, for the most part. I will give it three stars because I really do like the beat, but the vocals could use some work. Give it a try, at least for the beat. |

Didn't expect the tone coming outta of that pic..he got brick to his voice and it works with the beat. Im even diggin the sprinkling cpu sounding notes in the back. He can roll with the mvps, next up on the starting line.

Seems that Truth just took this beat from Jake One and did what he had to do. The progression in this song works well. The hook did not work with this song and overall I feel this isn't that great of a song.

Beat definitely bangs, made me reminisce over Dre's beat on Nas's "It Was Written" album. The only way I can describe the mixture of the emcee's messages and the gritty beat would be for me to throw on an all black fit, stick up and punk all the overrated rappers in the game, and then hug 'em afterwards. Always listening closely when Ras is on. 3.5

I like the smooth beat. Lyrics were good too. I like the last verse the best. It sounds like he stepped it up a little bit there. I would like to hear more.

Change change change, word is everywhere. It's a powerful word and can mean a lot to many people. While this song might not do the word its true justice, it doesn't desecrate it either.
Second verse has a real Eminem feel to it. Not really the voice inflection but just the overall flow of it. That is not a bad thing but it is the first thing that came to mind while I was hearing it. Decent song, not something I would play over and over but definitely something downloadable. No real stand out verses came to me, the second one just stuck out because of what it reminded me of. Could have been better but does get its message across, 2 1/2 rounded up. |

Definitely feels like a throwaway beat from Jake One. The artists do what they can with it but, if Jake is doing this whole project, hopefully he steps his game up back to a Stimulus level.
Decent track. |
