Since releasing sophomore album Trey Day, Trey Songz has grown considerably, both as an artist and as a man. Recently, the singer overhauled his image to match his more mature mindset, notably springing for a fade. This makeover comes right in time for the arrival of his third album, Ready. Now that buzz singles In Ya Phone and Brand New have had time to heighten listener anticipation, Trey has decided that the time is ripe to release his lead single, which sees him once again joining forces with songwriter Johnta Austin and production team Stargate (the combo that made Can’t Help But Wait a Grammy-winning hit). Tired of the one-night stands that accompany big-name status, the Petersburg, Virginia native realizes what it will take to make him feel truly complete: I Need A Girl. Traditional R&B depends on three things: vocals, writing, and production. In a nutshell, I Need A Girl has the whole trifecta, and should be just what Trey needs to get Ready a solid release date (look for it to drop this summer).

Stargate is an expert on R&B tracks and this is way better than Brand New. The production is perfect and I like that catchy melody throughout the hook. His vocals are smooth and complete. I cant rate this less than a classic. Perfect example of a smooth R&b track!

The title is obviously going to make everyone think about those P. Diddy songs from a few years back (both parts, haha) but I did like this track. Trey's vocals are real smooth and pleasing to listen to. It sounds to me like its catchy enough to be a successful single for Trey Songz... In Rotation

This is why I consider Trey one of the best R&B singers now & ever! PERFECT vocals, expressive and genuine.
That sound during the chorus is catchy and does a great job setting this production apart from all the last similar ones by Stargate (Irreplaceable, Hate that I love you, With you...). |

I've heard this song a long time ago except Johnta Austin was the one singing it. I guess since it didn't blow up which is kind of whats been going on for him he gave it too Trey. Any way the chorous sounds almost the same to the original but Trey gives this verison a more youthful sound. This is a good song, hopefully it will do well for him.

trey is my second favourite rnb singer (just after kels)... but i cannot give this more than 3 stars. the production is well crafted, but as usual, stargate are repeating something very similar to beyonce's irreplaceable or chris brown's with you (spanish guitar, 808 drums and a subtle violin line and so on...). however, Songz CAN sing, and most of all he doesn't need no @*#$! autotuning. i agree with my man cb126405... what the heck happened with In ya Phone??? that was huge...

This is decent production on this track right here. Very professionally done. This just doesn't sound like the type of song I am used to listening Trey rock to, but its kind of cool. His voice is unique and he sounds great. I just don't like the song too much. It sounds like a song that is perfect for right now since Chris Brown is all messed up in the game...This track is made for CB! HAHA!

Overall it's a good song. I am dissapointed with it though. When you combine Trey Songs, Johnta, and Stargate, I expect to hear one of my new favorite songs. I don't think it was one of Stargate's best productions. I like there older productions before they blew up in the U.S. (See there work for Blue). But overall, it was still a good song. 3.5 stars.
Chilltown7, Trey has one of the smoothest voices, but Craig David has him (and everyone else) beat. |

Stargate stick to their usual production method of guitar strings and bass/clap rhythm, but it sounds alright here. Their producing can get a bit too similar, making the track not as enjoyable, but Trey does well. He's definitely matured here, radio ready, track is fresh.

When i first listened to this son i wasn't really feeling, but decided to download it anyway. After about 4 or 5 listens i was hooked. Its definently catchy and hopefully it'll get radio play. I just hope other people catch on to it. Although, i don't know if its a guitar or whatever but that constant sound kind of got on my nerves, but I got used to it.
