Trey Songz - Can't Be Friends
Artist: Trey Songz
Producer: Mario Winans
Album: Passion, Pain & Pleasure
Label: Songbook/Atlantic
Trey Songz has been scaring me lately. Actually, correction: Atlantic Records has been scaring me lately. It’s been Trey Day every day for the last year and a half, and I had feared that the crooner would be stricken with “T-Pain fate syndrome” - over-saturation and subsequent fan regurgitation. After hearing the heart-churning and ear-pleasing new single Can’t Be Friends, though, I don’t think we have to worry about gagging from having more Songz shoved down our throats (insert Say Aah joke here). Rather, Trey teams up with producer Mario Winans to create a powerful and suffocating stomp-snap, piano demi-ballad that has the sex inventor delivering some of his best vocals to date. Some fans may find themselves turning up their noses at the song’s minimalist production, but sometimes less is much, much more than, especially on a slow jam like this. So, yes, Trey is coming out with a new album. Yes, he appears to have sidestepped the T-Pain fate bullet, and yes, you should be happy. Passion, Pain & Pleasure hits stores September 14.

It is well-documented that I was frustrated last year when Trey released "LOL Smiley Face" as a single. Why would such a talented singer need to turn to fad/gimmick record? Well, Trey has moved on since then and its safe to say now - after listening to his new ballad - that those radio-sellout days are over.
This might be my favorite Trey Songz effort since he burst onto the scene in 2005 with his debut. Good stuff! |

It took a while for me to get into this, but by the end I felt pretty good about it. Neither the production nor the vocal melody is all that catchy or attention grabbing, but it is a great backdrop for Trey to showcase his vocal talents.

I'm quite sure that, against Z's hopes, his new album will contain songs like LOL. For me, "Bottoms Up" is to put in the same box; the anti-singing, money-yearning hip-pop-box usher has recently taken over.
Unlike this song, which is definitely one of hist best vocal-performances surrounded by a as smooth as ever laid down M.Winans-Production. If he teams up with B.Cox again, even if only for one song, I'll be looking forward to September 14th. |

Hmm...pretty instresting song here. Lyrically it's great. I love the story told in the song and Trey shows some great vocals and maturing as well.
But production wise, it's kind of boring. Maybe I need to hear it more for me to really love it but the beat just needed something added to it for me to really find the song great. Great direction for Trey, I would love to see a video for this. |

matza made a good point; but i must say this is a great song to counter 'bottoms up.'
i was convinced trey wasn't going to show out as strong as he did with ready because 'bottoms up' was a let down. however, this song reminds me of the passion i felt when trey first came out, only his vocals are stronger here. i actually like how simple this song is, he doesn't need anything extra for this. |

This is the Trey Songz that I know and respect. His recent album wasn't anything too special, but with cuts like this, I think Trey's newest album is gonna be spectacular. Trey's smooth vocals combined with Mario's production makes this a near classic for me. 4.5

Tremaine has a gift for writing songs that women fall in love with. That being said, I think this is a little too somber to see commercial success as a single, but we will see.

This is a good contrast to Bottoms Up. It showcases what he does best in his albums, deliver heartfelt and relatable songs. And im pretty sure everyone can relate to this one.

Much better then his first single. Production & Trey both sounded really smooth, which made for a pretty dope track that should get some love on the radio

Damn. On a purely vocal level, I think this is one of the best tracks Songz has laid down in a long time. I can't be the only one hearing shades of MJ. He's got the club hits down (Say Aah, etc.), if he can get his classic r&b game up a little bit he'll be ready to bring it to the next level.

Truly one of the best Trigga tracks i've heard to date..this ballad embodys the title of his new album and i hope its the leading track. Production is absolutely perfect because all the emotion and lyrics stand out like they should.

I like this song alot. Trey is far from the best singer but he sounds good on this track. I like the lyrics as well. I think the very minimal production definitely works for this track.

Damn Trey...I'm a huge fan of minimal production when an artist has great talent, and this is a perfect example. I rarely listen to his recent club hits he's released (not to disregard his ability), but how can I not be impressed with a performance like this with a storyline that intertwines with my reality? 4.5 keep it comin'.

Man I wish you could go back and change your rating stars.
After listening to song a few more times, I love it even more. The production sounds great in the background, almost like the score to a movie. Great work from Trey and Mario Winans. Hopefully more song like this on the album and some production from Bryan M. Cox would be great too. 4 Stars-Banger! |

This is the Trey that I like, when he really lays down the vocals. I understand catering to clubs with some of his songs, but I much prefer this. I knew he could sing every since he came on with "Gotta Go" and "Gotta Make It", he should continue to prove it wit joints like this. "We Should Be" off Trey Day is also a real nice record. Solid record, looking forward to his newest.

The production here is Nice and smooth and crispy. The Bass is insane. Trey songs reminds me of a Male version of Toni Braxton with the way he sings, But this is DEFINITELY a good thing. This is a really nice song, and usually I don't even like slow songs. This one just feels different. Nice Joint!

Trey slips from cheesy to sexy and back around weaving through diff beats which makes him such a good artist, who comes up with great songs.
The minimilistic production works well with a slow jam. |

It is good, but I am not loving it. I can't say that I think his BS, "fad/gimmick" songs, as Z put it are over. I can see him putting some more songs like LOL Smiley Face out, and I will just skip over them when they do hit.
