Though there’s a time and a place of every kind of music (well, except for Kenny G.), I think I speak for many heads when I say that uncut, gimmick-free hip-hop is always welcome in my headphones. Realizing that dope beats and rhymes are never not in high demand, Torae delivers That Raw on the latest single off his forthcoming, DJBooth.net-hosted album. Backed by the gritty, bell/brass samples and boom-bap percussion of veteran beatsmith Pete Rock, the Big Apple underground mainstay reminds us what hard-hitting street lyricism sounds like. And, lest anyone get any ideas about f*cking with him, Torae leaves the competition pre-emptively ethered: “Dog what you tellin’ me? I’m not, but these n*gga’s supposed to be hot / I lay vocals at rotisserie spots. / Flame-spitta n*gga, the only time you ever was hot, was when your pops shot you out of his c*ck.” Damn… just damn. Time to weigh in: is this the “type a’ sh*t” you’ve been asking for? More is on its way—watch for Torae’s For the Record street album to arrive on DJBooth for purchase on November 1 out now.

As the title suggests, Pete Rock and Torae (and this cut) are indeed raw.

This is a good overall track right here. Nice production by Pete Rock and Torae has some hard lyrics. This bumps. I'll throw it into rotation, but it doesn't really stand out.
