Released to a disappointing critical and commercial reception back in 2009, Timbaland‘s Shock Value II represented a sizable step backwards from its “near-classic” predecessor, and 2010 online series Timbaland Thursdays, did little to rebuild his stature. So, what’s next for Timbo—a fresh start? A book deal? A long vacation? Nope; he’s doubling down with another Shock Value album. Newly-released lead single Pass at Me finds him—where else?—hanging at the local spot, spitting game to a shawty whose smooth moves never fail to turn him on. While the premise is club boilerplate, there’s no denying the record’s dancefloor appeal. Presumably assisted by heavyweight guest (and club mainstay) David Guetta, Timbo blends syncopated percussion, a thumping bassline and a classic “Ole, ole, ole…” chants into a compulsively body-moving backdrop for his reflections on the female form, as well as some bawdy, nursery rhyme-inspired bars from Pitbull (”Jack and Jill went up the hill, each with a buck and a quarter / Jill came back with $2.50, what a working girl…”). Is this the kind of material that’ll help Timbaland bounce back from his recent funk? You decide—and keep it locked all the latest details on the yet-unscheduled Shock Value III.

Why does this feel like Timbaland trying to do what the industry is doing instead of doing him?

Echoing what Z said, this isn't what he does. I have the same feeling for Akon and his recent work, but Timbo doing this is not right...then again his last album he did songs with Katy Perry and Miley Cyrus...yeah this might actually be an improvement now that I think about it.

I like house music & rap... but i find this to be terrible. Pitbull would have to be my least favorite rapper on the planet at the moment (im over Give Me Everything, it still gets played everywhere here)

considering that Timbo was like the hottest producer out just a few years ago, and now he's doing songs with David Guetta, it really shows how little faith he has in his own brand

I'd rather hear Timbo work with Afrojack, than Guetta. Guetta's overrated. Z nailed what was on my mind: I want to hear Timbo do him, not the mainstream. I'd only commend the "Ole ole" sample.

I think that he's just trying too hard to fit in the techno world we apparently live in right now.

If Timbo was pumping out hot beats every other day (as he used to), I would excuse this as a bit of fun, but seeing as he isn't... I consider this move a bit of desperation

It's not the most uptempo dance track, but that's no reason to dislike it. Not gonna lie. The house production works, and I like what Timbaland does with the hook.
That being said, Pitbull needs to go back to the drawing board, on his whole career. There was a point a few years back when I heard some of Pitbull's mixtape rapping and was thoroughly impressed. I swear the dumber Pitbull makes his raps, the more popular they become. It's unfortunate that the production seems to fit Pitbull's style. I think that Timbaland produced this song with Pitbull in mind. Might sound better with Enrique, just sayin. |
