T.I. - Get Back Up
Artist: T.I.
Producer: The Neptunes
Album: King Uncaged
Label: Grand Hustle/Atlantic
It’s certainly been a busy week for T.I. Defusing a suicide attempt, being sentenced to an 11 month stay in jail, and now a new, incredibly appropriate new single. On Get Back Up, the Atlanta-bred emcee reflects on his actions - apologizing for them and stating “I’m only human y’all”. He also interpolates Cee-Lo‘s classic verse from, Git Up, Get Out when he states, “I admit, yeah I done some done sh*t/ Disappointed everybody, I know/ Try not to hold that against me though.” Lyrics are the real highlight of the cut, as T.I. seems to prove time and time again if he wants to gets serious behind the mic, he’s still among the best. The production is handled by The Neptunes, who provide an introspective canvas for T.I. through subtle snares and electronically smooth synths. Chris Brown, who knows a thing or two about trying to recover from a public scandal, also assists TIP, singing a heavily produced hook that helps bolster the sincere tone of the song. I think I speak for everybody when I say get home soon Tip. Let’s hear the King Uncaged already.

It is a shame that T.I. won't be around to see this record climb the charts. Sadly, making music about his level of greatness and stature has been replaced with music about his state of being and position in life.

Chris definitely could have done with out that auto-tune in this one. I think it would've been much better without it. Otherwise he was great on the hook. TIP comes fast and hard on the mic like he lost it and made a comeback, even though he never actually did loose it. While I really like this track, it's missing something that can make it really big like some of the songs on his last album. In fact, all the songs that have been released from this album are. I'm still waiting on that song he did with Lady GaGa to drop. I have a feeling about that one.

Good redemption song. T.I.'s verses seemed forced over the beat tho IMO

Wow! A T.I., Chris Brown, and The Neptunes collabo...and it's boring. This is such a dissapointment, I respect T.I. for the message but wasn't he doing songs like these on the last album. Move on to something new. I'm tired of these type of songs.
I thought the proudction was boring and weak compared to The Neptunes previous work. Chris didn't have much to do at all which just brought down the song. A real let down. |

This was real!! I really felt where T.I. was coming from, this should do great. Chris had a smooth chorus, didn't even realize he had auto-tune..he doesn't need it. But overall great.

I don't know what it is about T.I., but I just can't seem to jump on his bandwagon. Chris Brown was a nice contribution and the production complimented both artists. Chris Brown's vocals floating around in the background of the verses was hot. T.I. just isn't my cup of tea. This deserves rotation status.

Boring. This won't break the Top 40. King Uncaged is getting off to a rough start. I'm surprised people are still enlisting Chris Brown to guest on their tracks. His presence is a kiss of death at this point. The beat is nice and T.I. comes off on par. Nothing to get excited about here.

Best single this era, it's a shame he won't be here to promote it. He best pull a Wayne and shoot like 20 videos before going in.

1st of all, Big up to T.I for dealing with that suicide situation last week, it's a real pity he can't keep out of jail though. These two men have had their trouble but I really hope they can get back up again... Gotta agree with Baer, there is something missing on this. It certainly isn't bad though

Nice melody by Chris, TIP delivers on this one. Should be a reasonable hit for 2 artists that have had quite a tough time recently. King Uncaged still hasn't had a big worldwide hit like Whatever You like, Dead & Gone or Live Your Life, and I don't think this will be that hit either.... I thought the beat by the Neptunes needs a bit of work, got a feeling this won't be the final version. Overall a solid effort.
Just on another note, does this mean King Uncaged isn't coming anymore? I can't really see them putting it out now especially with that title, though it would major let down if we had to wait ANOTHER year for it.... |

Pretty solid track here. The production dosnt sound like anything The Neptunes usually make though its seems to be missing something. Chris was a solid guest feature, good to see him coming back strong. The verses from T.I. were dope. I doubt this will be a massive hit, though i still think it will crack the top 20.

I'm Back!!!
Apologies for my silence of late; a combination of increased workload and other general complications has kept me away from DJBooth but nevertheless everything has returned to normal and so I have returned---but at a relatively comfortable frequency. This new TI joint is really screwing with me. Do I like it or not? Sometimes when I listen, it just sounds like far less interesting than it has to be. Initially underwhelming, this mid-tempo Neptunes production has grown on me quite a bit, and it makes the raw & honest rhymes stand out more, so that's totally fine. Chris Brown's complimentary vocals are nice, though at times they are not quite as captivating as it could have been, as vocals partially overlap each other. This also doesn't quite live up to the bar set by TI ("No matter What" anyone?). Other times, I'm won over by its earnestness, and it's a whole heck of a lot relevant than his recent singles. Maybe, I'm looking at it the wrong way. This song is more appropriate and inspiring than a 'hit' could ever be, and it's all the better for that. Lyrically on point, TI does a supreme job of addressing his personal & legal problems and his desire to overcome all obstacles without sacrificing skill or flow, one can feel the emotions fairly well. So, I've gotta say my initial impressions of "Get Back Up" have become much more positive with subsequent listens. It's grown on me. I'd encourage both @HoamBoy & @Phantastic to listen again and give it another shot! |

Nice introspective track. The Neptunes have held down TIP on the smooth tracks on his albums for a while. The Neptunes have been doing their thing lately on tracks from this to Tyga - First Time. I agree with others, Chris Brown didn't need the auto-tune. Nice song, 4-stars.

The production on here is pretty cool. It sucks, but its becoming normal for T.I. to release very good music and then go directly to jail right after. Nice track and definitely is cool to see TI and Breezy on a positive track. I forgive you both! You both are still gonna do well, and bring the Light Skins back for good too! Easy BANGER!

Nice. I'm glad that it differs from his previous tracks, where he usually raps about his swagger or some shit like that.

I like T.I.'s music, but seriously, the personal issues are going to drain him of the ability to reenter to game easily. This track is decent, 3.5 stars. I gotta agree, the auto-tune wasn't necessary, but it doesn't stick out too much.

regardless of what the song is about, great flow, great lyrics, and great verses. and this has got to be the hardest "the neptunes" best to date. i wish producers of these days would follow the simplicity of this production, most like kanye try to hard to complicate it and end up failing.
