The Throne - No Church in the Wild
Artist: The Throne
Featuring: Kanye West , Jay-Z , Frank Ocean
Producer: 88-Keys and Kanye West
Album: Watch The Throne
Label: Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam/IDJMG
In May 2004, Kanye West shocked the listening public and radio programmers alike by praising Jesus in a hit hip-hop record. Released as a single in March of this year, his and Jay-Z‘s Watch the Throne album opener No Church in the Wild was equally provocative, highlighting the links between religious, political and erotic power in a manner that would make Michel Foucault proud. Just in case anyone missed the point amidst the cryptic lyrics, however, The Throne have enlisted French director Romain Gavras (of M.I.A.‘s Born Free infamy) to craft an official visual that’ll drive it home with the force of a Molotov cocktail exploding against a cathedral wall. Delivered over Yeezy and 88-Keys’ ominous production (complete with the ethereally intense hook vocals of Frank Ocean) The Throne‘s subversive bars receive a bracing, but natural complement in footage of rebel forces facing off against riot gear-clad police. The combo is sure to spark conversations in the Booth and beyond. And for the two or three people who still haven’t copped Watch the Throne, the 2011 set is available now wherever fine music is sold.

Whenever we get a REAL music video and not just a rapper with rented jewels around his neck, sitting on a rented car in a rented lot, I am happy.

"No Church In The Wild" touches on issues of morality, death, classism and theodicy, the song rejects what seems to be the traditional Abrahamic religions and then brings in some tantalizing mentions of wisdom and deification. It's more of a statement against church as an organized religion -Jessica Misener
Religion, philosophy and one's consciousness of self are visually depicted in the video - with the statues of the god's, the church, scenes of human rebellion and even elements of the wild thrown in - such as the elephant. When I watch this video and hear the song - I can't help but reflect on what we would be if we were indeed 'in the wild.' Without all that we know of the accepted religions, faith, philosophy which predominantly empower the State and our lives. So much that we have come to know and accept as norms in our Western lives are derivations of all these things. I interpret the rioters as people rejecting the norms of religion (the church) and philosophy and the police as representatives of the State - trying to suppress and regain control of those who dare to question the 'known' or become non-believers. However, the religious symbolism featured in the song feeds the Illuminati theories concerning Kanye West and other pop icons. "No Church In The Wild" is yet another demonstration of why Kanye West (with the help of Jigga) is one of the greatest hip hop artists today. I feel that people get blind sided by his moments of arrogance and fail to see the brilliance of his work. Brilliant because his material is stimulating, stylistic, socially aware, clever and challenges the way you think about things. In my opinion "No Church In The Wild" as a song and as an artistic visual expression - deserves much praise. Well done lads. May the Roc be forever in the building. http://wp.me/p1JLVp-1qN |
