The Throne - Gotta Have It
Artist: The Throne
Featuring: Jay-Z , Kanye West
Producer: The Neptunes, Kanye West
Album: Watch The Throne
Label: Roc-A-Fella/Def Jam/IDJMG
“What you need, what-what you need, I got what you need.”—assuming that “what you need” is a new record from The Throne. Today, Jay-Z and Kanye West return to our pages with yet another soon-to-be-hit single off their Grammy-nominated collaborative debut—the sixth in total. Gotta Have It finds Pharrell Williams playing samples from three of soul godfather James Brown’s classics (Don’t Tell a Lie About Me and I Won’t Tell the Truth About You, People Get Up and Drive Your Funky Soul and My Thang) against a snippet from the soundtrack to ‘98 action movie The Replacement Killers as the rap heavyweights show off their effortlessly fly chemistry. Among many memorable moments, the record sees Hov drop his poker face to deliver some of the most hilarious (yet intimidating) wordplay on the album: “What’s up motherf*cker where my money at? / You gon’ make me come down to your house where your mummy at / Mummy-wrap the kids, have ‘em cryin’ for they mummy back.” Gotta Have It is scheduled to impact radio tomorrow, January 31, and (for the two or three of y’all who still haven’t copped the set) Watch the Throne is available now wherever fine music is sold.

I liked this record upon first listen when the album dropped, but I really got hooked on it after seeing Jay and Ye perform it live on the WTT Tour this past fall. Great single choice, if you ask me.

My personal favorite from the album, it has "what I need, what, what I need" to make it into the top 5 of my iPod most-played list.

One of my favorite joints off The Throne. This is a song I had to play over and over and over again when I first heard it and it still bumps in every way. Classic Material...5-stars!

I liked this song more than "N****s in Paris". That says it all. This and "No Church in the Wild" are my favorites. Just an amazing album.

Wait...is DJ Booth just another PR outlet for the major labels and artists that rely on the radio "hit cycle" to push their singles to mass audiences?
Most rap heads, and I would guess a majority of The Booth's audience, had this song on repeat...5 months ago. Old news, but I understand. Gotta play the game (legal issues, DMCA, etc.). Classic song off of what was probably the most classic album of the past year, nonetheless. |
