After two years and plenty of buzz built among the “new old school” crowd, The Cool Kids are finally ready to drop their official debut album, When Fish Ride Bicycles (due out in late summer). On the official prelude, the Chicago duo have teamed up with producer/mixtape DJ Don Cannon to let the industry know that they’ve Gone Fishing and won’t hang up their lines till they’ve caught a lunker! With a unique style sure to earn them more respect (not to mention finer ladies) than their mainstream peers, the twosome are clearly musical Champions in the making. The steeze they showcase here is accompanied by a split-beat; during the verses, Chuck Inglish‘s percussion dominates, while the hook is backed by Cannon’s piano loop/synth boardwork. If you think this record’s a nice catch, hook yourself up with a copy of Gone Fishing, available for download at the duo’s website on Monday.

The Cool Kids are a hit or miss duo with most Booth heads. Either people LOVE their work or don't think much of it. For the most part, nothing should change with CHAMPIONS. I like the duo, so I say keep up the good work.
Shouts to Don Cannon on the production tip. I spoke with him when he was in the Chi doing this joint and he was hella excited about it. I can understand why.

I'm with Pasina a little bit on this - The Cool Kids have been in the limelight for about a year now, and I always said that I feared their time would come to an end with that same style.
I still like the songs, but they don't really excite me anymore or give me the thrill they used to. This is a typic CK track, and I'm lowering it to a 2 because it's missing the WOW factor. |

I actually felt this was a step towards a more versatile C.K. I liked the track, but I agree...I want them to come with something even better than this. If they are left field, they should go even lefter...(yeah, I know that's not a word, but whatev)

This is ill!! Big props on Don Cannon with the beat because it is perfect for The Cool Kids. The lyrics keep you interesting and the hook is catchy and creative. Banger!

Cool Kids drop some decent verses on a beat that’s nice match for their style & lyrical taste ... dis could've been a bit more appealing had the beat stayed upbeat throughout the entire song ...

I'm a ridah when it comes to Cannon and his production, but to be honest like DJ Z said, TCK are eighter a hit or miss with some people and i'm sorry to say they're just not my cup of tea, and its not just this joint...since ive been seeing them featured on this great site (what up DJ Booth and all my peoples) ive been youtube-ing them and i just cant get into these dudes...so it would be unfair for me to rate it, but i'ma drop it on ya'll anyway...2 stars

Nice to see the Cool Kids finally back at it. This isn't a Banger from them, but I know they'll have more hottness when thier debut album drops. IDK Chuck said he's on some Dre ish, so we'll see. Chucks percussion sounds best wit that tight piano loop over top.

Cant lie, I been sleepin on cool kids, and this track just reminds me exactly why. I dont hate it but its def not going in rotation. The production I can kinda get with though, but they always bare minimum maybe even less in they flows. just my opinion

I wouldn't mind if Cannon produced their entire album: they really need some energy to come from the beat, so that heat during the chorus is very nice contrasting the verses!
I love Cool Kids (and any rapper who engages his brain before start rapping, for that matter), but they really need to think about ways to deliver their lyrics (which are nice) with MORE DYNAMIC and EXPRESSIVE flows. You can't sound the same forever and for every different emotion. |
