Clipse - I'm Good
Artist: Clipse
Producer: The Neptunes
Album: Till The Casket Drops
Label: Re-Up/Columbia
Judging by the many four and five-star reviews the duo earned for their last single, Booth regulars didn’t really need to be reminded that The Clipse‘s return to the spotlight was Kinda Like a Big Deal. Confident that their fanbase remains as sizable, and as devoted as ever, Malice and Pusha T take their second official single as an opportunity to simply kick back and enjoy their financial security. Being that we’re in the middle of a recession, I’m Good will be a difficult jam for many of us to relate to, but that’s only a minor mark against a record with a whole lot going for it. It’s hard not to sound good over an instrumental as ear-pleasing as this cut’s glossy, Neptunes-produced beat, but the twosome certainly aren’t sunbathing on the job; the brothers freshen up the time-tested topics of cash, clothes, cars, and women with plenty of their trademark deadpan swagger, as well as a few vivid similes (“...swimmin’ through the streets, lookin’ like I’m Shamu…”). I’m Good is lighter fare than the duo’s previous single, but its summer-jam vibe is sure to stir up yet more buzz for Till the Casket Drops, set to hit stores September 8th.

I loved the laid back, soulful production. The verses were straight, but the production and Pharrell was more interesting on this.

First, let me remind everyone, I am a HUGE Clipse fan (and supporter). They always get mad love in the Booth. However, knowing what the Clipse and The Neptunes have accomplished together previously, this is slightly disappointing. The subject matter is stale and the production would have suited them better if it was a little more grimy.
For the sake of their new project, I hope radio supports this record. PS. John Legend on those adlibs would have helped. |

I can totally see John Legend in this they should've had in this track. That would have saved the track.

big fan of clipse as well, so i hold them to a higher level than most other artists. for that reason, this is the second record in a row that ive been dissapointed. this is still a good album track, but its nothin special and i dont see how this gets radio success. I know that they will have better songs on this album. They have so much more talent than this song shows, and the song is still decent. If they would have had John Legend on the hook and adlibs, it would have been a sick song. The verses were still pretty cool though and I was diggin the production. Worthy of rotation status.

John Legend would have given it another star. Still smooth though.

I was hoping for a 'Mr Me Too' or a 'Grindin' type of track, though this is still pretty solid. Dunno if this will get many plays on radio but I can guarantee I'll put this in my rotation

Clipse-Neptunes usually comes harder than this but this track is still worthy of my 3* ... smooth & catchy enuff to possibly gain average radio play ... Rotation.

I wonder how many coke references are in this one? We know what the clipse are bout. Pharrell is fly with the beats, never @et tired of this type style from him.

Perhaps I can explain...On "Hell Hath No Fury," the Clipse were mad, angry, & pissed off because of the whole Jive scenario (which likely inspired them to make that classic album in my opinion). Now that they're off Jive and enjoying Columbia, on "Till The Casket Drops" there are gonna be more positive-minded, upbeat jams (such as were on "Lord Willin").
OK, now to the song itself...Pretty much what Z said. This is good to just cruise to, but as we all know, the Clipse and the Neptunes are capable of a lot more. Still, this is very likely to be a radio hit and get their album available, so I'm gonna support it and look forward to plenty better album cuts (which probably won't make it on the radio). Plus it's just good to see Malice & Pusha back on the flow with Pharrell & Chad back on the beats! |

Gotta agree with my man Z - the only way I could be a bigger Clipse fan is if I started selling massive amounts of coke, but this track is dissapointingly tired material from a crew that's always creative.

Great cruise song...the beat from The Neptunes is crazy hot. The adlibs in the background definitely help create a chill vibe and The Clipse are on point with the lyrics. Banger!

This beat kind of threw me off. This is not the Clipse I'm looking for. I've been listening to Clipse since Grindin'. I was looking for something to build up on "I'm Kind Of Like A Big Deal." This is definently a low point after a great first single. I really like Clipse but this is not working for me.

His flow and the beat are extremely good, I can't bear the music and the song is too repetitive! Not bad but not my cup of tea, either

The hook is corny! The beat is kinda nice. I think the over polished beats really don't work for these doods. Because I'm not feeling this joint, and the one they did with Kayne. The re up gang lead single produced by scott storch.

Love the beat and the lyrics have their simple/effective mind transporting moments ( today is a good day ice cube on my chest). Unfortunately, despite the glimpses into something more than the obvious this will not be a long term summer season banger in the ride...

I don't like the flow that they came wit on the first verse, and to be honest I can't even tell this is the Clipse. But I can't deny that feel-good vibe the track gives off and the production is nice and laid back.

This production is GREAT! The Clipse sounds great with this beat. The lyrics are not bad, but i have heard better. Pharrell does his thing too. Overall, I really liked this and has been constantly on repeat for me since i heard it! I haven't heard the Clipse's earlier work before "Kinda Like A Big Deal", but I'm lovin their new stuff! Judging by these reviews the older songs must be amazing to be much better than this!
And i agree that John Legend would sound great on here! |
