Talib Kweli - Cold Rain
Artist: Talib Kweli
Producer: Ski Beatz
Album: Gutter Rainbows
Label: Javotti/Caroline
Talk about great timing. Fresh off dropping one of the best verses in Good Friday history on Chain Heavy – in my not-so-humble-opinion – Talib Kweli has now dropped a new single off his own upcoming album, the nothing but high quality
kwelity Cold Rain. Although those who only know him from 24 Hour Karate School may think he’s new to the game, producer Ski Beatz has been crafting intricately constructed beats like the piano-soul meets boom-bap Cold Rain for years; as Talib says in the intro, their collaboration has been a long time coming. On the mic the legendary Blackstar emcee responds with a slowly delivered but unshakable flow, delivering line after line of uncompromising lyricism: “You take away the freedoms that we’ve been fighting to gain / then you disrespect the soldiers you askin to die in vain.” As always, Talib’s vocals are not for the faint of heart or weak of mind, so be prepared before you press play. In the mood for some more upliftingly deep and dope music from Kweli? Be sure to kick off 2011 right and pick up his forthcoming album Gutter Rainbows on January 25.

Ski Beatz really impressed me with his "24 Hour Karate School" album and ever since its release I've been checking for production credits. Evidently, Talib felt the same way, which was a great call. Personally, I like Kweli over slightly more upbeat production, but if you are a fan of either you should like what you're listening to.

The song overall is definitely 4-star worthy. But if this is the intro song to the album, then there's no doubt in my mind that this is a classic track.

As I wrote in the intro, if you don't enjoy using your brain, you don't enjoy Kweli. But if you enjoy intelligence delivered dopely, you'll have Cold Rain on repeat all day. Great to see the man continuing to go strong.

"Let's try something new" no disrespect to Talib or Ski Beatz but I don't know if I necessarily like, at least compared to his older stuff.

I agree exactly with DJ Z. I liked Talib's last records. This has a great energy with a nice flow of verses. The production is great from Ski Beatz (like always). Another good record from Talib Kweli. In rotation for me.

Another Hot track for Mr. Kweli. Love that beat, it has a kind of Gospel sound to it. Does this man ever not have heaters.
