Talib Kweli - 1st Time
Featuring: Consequence
Producer: William Diggs
Album: YearOfTheBlackSmith's Community Mixtape
Label: Blacksmith/EMI
I remember the first time I heard Talib Kweli. It was my freshman year of high school, and as my mom would drive me to school I’d insist on listening to Get By over and over again. After maturing (a little) I’ve grown to appreciate Kweli’s music even more, including today’s mixtape leak, 1st Time, featuring G.O.O.D. Music’s Consequence. Appearing on YearOfTheBlacksmith’s Community Mixtape, 1st Time’s sample will sound familiar to hip-hop heads - it shares the same Marvin Gaye sample as Jay-Z’s American Dreamin – and the soulful William Diggs production provides the sonic outline for Talib to lyrically paint his canvas, creating a collage of sounds as Gaye’s vocals linger in the background. Consequence jumps in to provide a frankly flat chorus, but this is record is still nothing but Kwelity. Community will consist of tracks submitted by artists and fans, coming together to create a roughly 20 track project, which sounds like either an incredible or terrible idea. We’ll just have to wait until an unspecified date to find out if Talib’s got a dud or a masterpiece in the works.

The beat is nice and smooth. Talib sounds just as good as he always has. I'll throw this into rotation. It just felt like something was missing in order to send it over the top. Not sure what, but this is still cool.

There is no doubt that lyrically Kweli is one of the best. I would have liked to have heard more of Cons on this beat though.

I hate to do this, but Cons sounds sub par on this hook, which is a damn shame because otherwise this is excellent. Just sonic excellence. That Marvin Gaye sample is incredible, and Kweli kills the mic. Dope.

When I hear music like this it just makes me mad to think about all the garbage on hear on the radio in rotation. SHAME!!!! What is it going to take to get real music back on the radio? That's why no one is walking around with boom-boxes anymore. (and other reasons but you get what I'm sayin) You only see peeps with headphones listening to their own flavor. This is whatzUP!
