The Swapmeet Ensemble - FratHouse
Artist: The Swapmeet Ensemble
Producer: Poach Stevens
Album: One Man's Trash...
Label: Unsigned
Not content simply to switch up their sound from one record to another, Silence DemALL and Poach Stevens of The Swapmeet Ensemble seem to change lyrical personae as frequently as they change their socks. One day they’re rap revolutionaries, the next they’re concerned family men, and the next… Jäger-swilling fratboys? That’s right: on the latest leak off their forthcoming, Booth-sponsored street album (another exclusive world premiere!), the Oakland representers invite listeners down to The Frat House for a raucous, keg beer-fueled rager (finals be damned!). Stevens reprises his role behind the boards, borrowing an iconic riff from AC/DC’s T.N.T. to back him and his partner-rhyme as they detail various and sundry party activities: “Yes my dear, the mead is here / So have no fear and come right here and hold my ankles up while I try to kegstand this vat of beer.” Complete with a chant-along chorus, this joint is sure to earn heavy rotation at college soirees—and leave heads wondering what The Swapmeet Ensemble are gonna come up with next. If you’re digging it, keep it locked for further leaks leading up to the October 10, release of the crew’s One Man’s Trash… project.

This record was meant to be performed live. I am not sure it has the anthemic record gene (its not quite as live through my speakers or headphones), but its still quality enough for a few repeat listens.

I like the Swapmeet Ensemble. Get Mad! and Modern Warfare were both memorable, powerful and, to be very clear, authentic. I listened to those songs and you know this group is a few steps out of graduation. Now they leak The Frat House. It's a fun track, but it just doesn't sound like the group that I gladly have in my playlist. I don't think the group is in collage, so I can only guess they're taking us down memory lane, but it feels more like they're trying to fill some kind of niche. Ultimately the youth of the song is ingenuine coming from the duo and comes off more as a marketing ploy. it begs the question to be answered, do you sacrifice artistic integrity and authenticity to fill a niche. for the Swapmeet Ensemble, the answer is no you shouldn't.

harsh criticisms, but I get it. Not what I would expect from the Swapmeet, kind of a gimik, but it's clownin. good for the collage campus.

When you listen to The Swapmeet Ensemble, you have to drop all expectations, sort of like, well...when you walk into a swap meet. They're literally a patch-work of styles, sounds, cultures and apparently alcohol's, I dig it.

Its catchy and upbeat and the sample is kind of cool. However, I've grown tired of the frat rap, its getting pretty unoriginal and every song has the same formula where they put a new spin on a popular 70's/80's song and add lyrics about parties. The flow isn't bad but the content just isn't there.
