Styles P. - Shadows
Artist: Styles P.
Featuring: DJ Green Lantern
Producer: Statik Selektah
Album: The Green Ghost Project
Label: Nature Sounds
The Green Ghost is the kind of handle that just screams “comic-book hero.” Thus, it should comes as no surprise that DJ Green Lantern and LOX emcee Styles P are building anticipation for their forthcoming collaborative LP with an accompanying comic book (unrelated note: “Green Ghost” is also the name of one of the weirdest-looking board games I’ve ever seen). Not that the project needs that kind of (admittedly cool) gimmick to get heads’ attention – if previously-featured cut Pablo Doe didn’t convince you that the East Coast natives had some damned good tunes up their sleeve, final leak Shadows should do the trick. Here, Statik Selektah serves up a delicately tuneful beat Chipmunk-sampled from The Alan Parsons Project’s ‘82 single Old and Wise as Styles delivers his poetic take on life, death, and the streets. Green Lantern tops it all off with some authentic cuts, sampling vocal snippets from Biggie, DMX and Styles himself. If you’re digging this reflective track, you can find more on The Green Ghost Project when it drops next Tuesday, February 2.

The things Statik Selektah can do behind the boards... man, this is refreshing.
I am mad that Styles wasn't able to come through with a freestyle for our series (in promotion of this project), but if the entire Green Ghost Project sounds like this I'll be a happy camper (yes, a camper). |

Statik, you are an amazing producer!!! Strings, winds, AND percussion (there is so much beautiful melodies that you almost forget the percussion) were all HOT!
I like Styles delivery, waiting for Mr. Top Hat lyrics to listen closely (really hommie, HOW do u come up with the lyrics?! :p). @DjKidd: that chipmunk voice effect is what I hate the most about hip hop music, but how can you complain about it here and not on Luda's "How Low" (I hate the chipmunky sound so much i can't stand that song)? |

When a producer makes a sample work, it's the greatest thing to listen to. This beat is no exception, it's smoother than a baby's ass. Styles does his usual hard thing too.
Side note: I may not know a lot of non-rap, but most songs with Alan Parson samples are FIRE. Good band. |

DJ Green Lantern's one of my favorite producers. But what was his role on this track? Amazing production thanks to Statik Selektah.

For me Styles is improving in leaps and bounds, the man just feels inspired to me lately. Not classic rhymes, but this banged to me...plus Statik did the goddamn thing.

@XuUP17: I was wondering the same ass thing, did he mix in the samples and that's it?? Really does that deserve the credit of an ampersand?
Back to the track, Styles was slightly forgettable here only because I feel Statik's production eclipsed him slightly but it was still hot. |

I would select this track when people ask me "who is one of your favorite producers in hip hop?" Like K. Sparks, Mike Dreams, XV, Statik gets the respect from most of us here at DJ booth for taking every track seriously and using it to tell a story, and using it as a canvas to show their genius.

Styles P showcases his profound insights over a carefully-crafted
concoction. Statik Selektah definitely knows his way around samples, and constructs his beats with subtlety and unmatched artistry. |

The production is fire and the Green Lantern's simple additions of appropriate samples send the track over the top. I can't wait to cop the instrumental. Styles P has always been my favorite member of the LOX since the Training Day soundtrack so this song really could do no wrong.

I liked the production. The simple flutey tune worked well with the piano and voice samples. It could've used some more bass to give the whole thing more of a backbone.
Good vocals with some smooth flow...I approve, but nothing really stood out. I wouldn't call it a banger, purely because I felt it was lacking a bit on the low end...a bit too airy for my tastes. Give it a try. I think I'll like it the more I hear it. In rotation fo sho. |
