STS - F*ck a Hook
Artist: STS
Producer: Don Cannon
Album: Demand More 2 Mixtape
Label: G.O.L.D. Music
Parachute, STS’ last feature (his first under his slimmed-down stage name) earned largely positive feedback in the Booth, but readers seemed to agree that the track’s chorus was its weak link. Well, looks like the artist may have taken that criticism to heart – on his latest mixtape leak, the emcee formerly known as Sugar Tongue Slim says “F*ck a Hook!” While that statement seems a little odd, coming as it does in the middle of what can only be called the record’s hook, it’s crystal clear that the focus is on STS’ formidable mic skills. Backed by fellow A-town/Philly dual representative Don Cannon‘s mellow beat, sampled from the great J-Hova‘s Encore, the rapper gives his answer to that oft-discussed question: is hip-hop dead? Nah, says STS, it’s just confined to a wheelchair – but bandwagon-jumping novelty acts aren’t doing the genre any favors. Whether or not you agree with his perspective on the industry, it’s hard to argue with the skills and the realness STS showcases here. Demand More 2 is set to hit the ‘net in late March/early April.

I'm not sure what it is about Don Cannon and Jay-Z samples, but whoever is lucky enough to land the end result of that musical marriage is lucky.
The verses are on point - and extremely relevant in today's musical landscape - but the hook (ironically) needs a little work. Overall, rotation. |

This isnt enough to convince me to rate this song higher than a 3. But, it does prove that STS has some talent and deserves my attention next time the Booth features his work.

The samples got a little too cluttered, but STS had a flow that I could ride to on this. I agree with Z, that hook is pretty lame.

I like the beat on this one, STS comes out strong on lyrics, but he stumbles a little on the hook. It still is worth a few listen though, Rotation-Stuff!

i thought was pretty tight. he dropped some nice lines in there and i guess the dodgy hook can be explained by the song title?

What Z said...only I disagree about the hook (just check the title, and it's a non-factor)
