Who’s the Allen Iverson of rap? There was a short period in the early 2000’s during which Iverson believed, incorrectly, that he himself fit that description (Remember 40 Bars? Me neither.), and more recently Don Trip used the renowned point and shooting guard’s career as an object lesson in the pitfalls of life in the spotlight. On the latest leak off his forthcoming, DJBooth-sponsored street album, making its world premiere on our front page, Stevie Crooks puts himself forward as a candidate. With Large Professor‘s head-noddable, string-laced production (pulled from one of the heavyweight producer’s free beat tapes) banging in the background, the Golden State rhymesayer pores over the baller’s career highlights—in particular, the March 12, 1997 incident in which he crossed Michael Jordon. When not marveling at Iverson’s skills on the court, he finds time to spit the praises of another kind of crossover:” kush and Henny, the combined effects of which have him feeling like he’s “[swimming] through the clouds.” Like what you’re hearing? Plenty more bangers await on Crooks’ Cashmere Killer tape, scheduled to hit our mixtape page next Tuesday, June 12 for free streaming and download.
