Sterling Simms - Scream
Artist: Sterling Simms
Producer: The Stereotypes
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: RCA
Featured two short weeks ago, Sterling Simms’ latest single found him trying to drive his girl Coo Coo with lines like “We gon’ make a baby that go ‘goo-goo, ga-ga, mama, papa…’” While the track itself was well-received, many readers found the baby-talk a little… uh… weird. Seems like the lady in question may have agreed with our assessment, since the singer’s potential follow-up finds him delivering a considerably more adult, to-the-point proposition: “I’m gonna make you Scream,” as soon as I lay you down. Recent “In the Mix” interviewees The Stereotypes take an appropriately grown-and-sexy approach behind the boards, backing the One Records/Jive crooner’s come-ons with laid-back percussion and steamy synth-bells. This slow-jam’s bedroom appeal can’t be denied, but I’ll let you have the final say on whether this track makes a more effective aphrodisiac than Simms’ previous feature. Either way, though, you’ll want to keep it locked to you-know-where for the latest on Sterling’s forthcoming full-length, which has yet to receive a title or drop date.

This has the feel of a 90's R&B record... and for those playing along at home, bedroom-ready R&B was as dominant as it ever has been during that decade.
Not sure Simms has the vocal chops to truly ever turn in a smashing performance, but he certainly knows what to do with what he has to offer. Just a thought: In the hands of another artist - with a more powerful and lasting voice - this record could have been a super duper smash. |

Agree with Z on this one. His vocals are really just average here.

Before I read Z's comment I did have a flashback to my "Bump-n-grind" playlist, if ya know what I mean. Yes it has a great deal of 90's slow jams on it, and this immediately reminded me of that. The vocals aren't the best, but i like the vibe.

"Bedroom-ready R&B was as dominant as it ever has been during that decade."
Well said Z, you're dead on. This is much better than that Coo Coo nonsense. It's a quality r&b slow jam in every sense of the word. And Sterling may not have that top shelf gear the truly elite folks do, but there's really nothing to complain about here. This definitely could have played during one of my high school dances. |

his vocal abilities may not allow him to lay down a high-ranged performance, but what counts most for me is the passion in a singer's vocals. which means that i appreciate it the most when you can literally feel the lyrics supported by the artist and backed up by the beat. considering this interpretation the song is a solid effort.
it might the best contribution i've heard from sterling so far and for sure one of the better slowjams of the last few months. worth mentioning is Brandon Hines' "Steady" of his "In Search Of...LP" |

Most def. 90's era beats being put on display here. i agree with everyone, his vocals cannot hold up next to this steller production.
