The age of the DJ is coming back (sit down Khaled, I’m not talking about you). Leading the charge to return turntablists to their proper place in the hip-hop hierarchy is Statik Selektah, who we last heard being critically – and DJBooth listener – acclaimed for his work on his last single. Statik has jumped back on the wheels of steel for his new track Jaded, laying down production that’s simultaneously angelic and diabolic, mixing soft vocal samples with boom-bap snares and cymbal crashes. Joining Statik for some lyrical devastation are Joe Scudda, Truck North and Diz Gibran, who each take turns reflecting on how the realities of the rap game has left them more than a little jaded. Or as Truck North puts it, “This s**t somethin you might not want to face/a pill so bitter you might not want to taste.” Jaded is the latest single off Statik’s soon to be released EP The Pre-Game, set to hit your speakers on Dec. 1.
