Stanza - Supernova
Producer: Strange Republik
Album: Momentum EP
Label: Marquee Rhythms
Devoted citizens of Booth Nation will likely remember that Quantum Suicide, the super-group comprised of Searching for Bobby Fischer author Stanza on the mic and producer Strange Republik behind the boards, first popped up on our pages for their contribution to the RefinedHype Anniversary mixtape. Well, the response to their song on that project, Coma, was so strong we had to bring Quantum back, and so allow me to (re)introduce the duo on their new record and official DJBooth debut, Supernova. Much like his work on the aforementioned Coma, Republik crafts a hazy, somnolent beat that also features one of the stranger hooks, if you can call it that, in recent memory. Fittingly then, Stanza continues to prove he’s one of the more lyrically imaginative emcees working, dropping poetic, thought-inducing line after line: “Un-rehearse you, from your rehearsal / Rebirth you / Reteach / Today learnin a new speech / Now speak.” Fans of mindless, disposable music will want to stay far, far away from Suicide’s upcoming EP Momentum, set to drop September 28 via the greatest site ever created (that’d be DJBooth).

I echo Nathan's sentiments about DJBooth being the "greatest site ever created." If I am not allowed to say that, who is? Right?
Anywho, moving on to the record... Its strange, its a little depressing, and its unique enough to start a great conversation amongst music lovers. All-in-all its, like Nathan pointed out, not for everyone. But neither is coffee-flavored ice cream, so its all good. |

I consider myself pretty open minded when it comes to music, after being in NY you could be blasting Jay on one block and Marc Anthony on the next one. My quip is with this hook, what was that singer pandering about? That really wasn't needed. i was completely ok with the out-of-left- field production for this track because it seemed as if it were taylor made for the artist providing the talent. Another shortcoming i have about this track is the length, its about a minute and a half too short for me to rotate.

Obviously not for everyone, but I'm really feeling this. In fact, I'm digging it a little more each time I listen to it (hypnosis). I'm not always in the mood, but when I'm in an experimental, deep space, this will def be on my playlist.
Quantum needs to collab with Jason James and Rodney Hazard. |

I guess you have to first understand the thought experiment called "Quantum Suicide" to get where the music is coming from. I'm not a scientist but if you want to understand I've cut and pasted a couple of explanations to try to make it make sense. But before I go there this is some psychedelic shit that you either should be in deep thought or extremely high when listening. Ok Quantum Suicide explained:
Basically it's a thought experiment from the 80's that pretty much states that when you take an action there are two possible outcomes. The two possible outcomes create parallel universes. And each time its done over and over more universes are created. The actual experiment is a suicide in which there is a 50/50 chance you die. There is always a universe in which you would live. Therefor conscious being lives forever. I really chopped up the experiment and someone who read this that's really into Quantum Physics will probably blast me but I had to try to put it in laymen terms of how I understand it. A Super Nova is a star exploding causing death and life. LOL. Stanza come in here and help me out I think I'm going to far with this. |
