SmCity - Mr. IDGAF
Artist: SmCity
Producer: Oddisee
Album: The Indie Life: Hate, Love & Money
Label: Twenty20 Music
In the market for a f**k? Then you’re gonna want to look elsewhere, because nary a one is given on SmCity‘s latest effort (though perhaps, if you asked nicely, he could spare a sh*t or a damn). So proud of his ability to shrug off the haters that he’s adopted the moniker “Mr. IDGAF,” the D.C. rhymesayer gathers two equally non-f**k-giving DMV neighbors to back him up on this pensive cut, the latest leak off his forthcoming, Booth-sponsored project. In addition to crafting the slow-burning, brass-fortified instrumental, Oddisee guests on verse two, following up the headliner’s resolute opener with an equally determination-drenched account of his trouble-free life philosophy (“My interest in what I can’t control: near none / So I’m not fazed by mere ploys, let them tantrums go.”). Last but most certainly not least, Phil Adé does his thing on the back, firing off a few b-ball-themed punchlines and giving thanks to “G-O-D” for granting him strength to rise above his struggles. Digging it? There’s plenty more dopeness in store on Sm’s The Indie Life: Hate, Love & Money LP, set to hit our mixtape page next Tuesday, January 12.

One listen to this record with its lively beat, tight lyricism and fun hook and I doubt anyone won't not give a f**k afterwards.

This goes hard right here. The beat is smooth and rugged at the same time. Nice production by Oddisee. Everyone's flow had a good contrast. Good Chorus too. I f#cks with this...

You guys have some good draft picks here. Solid track.
It needs something though, maybe an aggressive guest verse by a character type rapper at the end (like an aggressive DMX unique voiced type to really express IDGAF) to provide a little more edge. Hell, you could throw Rittz at the end in a remix. Or perhaps a production change to a more upbeat beat at the end (something like the end of 'Heaven' from Scarface's The Fix album) or some background singers at the end or something. It's like a very good meal that just needs some added spice at the end to be perfect I think. 3.5 stars |

Catchy, and I love the beat. But I found myself waiting for it to really kick in. Maybe my opinion will change once I hear this on a better sound system; I might be missing something.
