Brace yourselves, Slum Village fans – Elzhi, Illa J and T3‘s latest single may come as a little bit of a surprise. Faster finds the Motown trio diverging from the smooth-but-gritty sound they pioneered in partnership with the late J Dilla to try on something a little radio-friendlier and (slighty) more uptempo than usual. Backed by RJ Young‘s glossy, chilly synths, the group showcase their sweet-talking skills, trying to persuade a special girl into shifting their relationship into high gear: “What you’re wishin’ I can do, it’s my mission I plan to, in addition I’ll stand through the good, the bad weather, the rain, the shine, you remain as mine…” On the guest tip, Booth-approved singer/songwriter Colin Munroe shows why he’s hip-hop’s go-to guy for studio-layered, octave-jumping hook vocals, crafting a chorus as catchy as it is un-singalong-able. Faster has definite potential, but the question remains: is its pop-appealing sound a good look for Slum Village? I’ll leave that for you to decide. If you’re digging it, keep it locked for the latest on their Villa Manifesto LP, due out this summer via E1 Music.

I cannot say I am used to this sound from Slum Village (RIP Dilla), but I refuse to hate on it. Listening to "Faster" is actually so enjoyable that I don't have that uncomfortable feeling I thought I would have.

Young RJ, your flight is boarding.

This is definitely a smooth listen, not up to par with their other smooth classic "Selfish", but damn close.

WOOOOOOAAAA, didn't expect this one, probably the freshest song by slum village since "Selfish". Yeah, that is saying alot...this beat is just so luxurious. Goodbye cruel world, hello friendly skies!

And did anyone else hear the "Art of Noise" sample at the end?

lovin this...the perfect mainstream song for Slum Village to get back into the public's eye. What's great about this though is the fact that it has mainstream appeal but still stays true to Slum's "real hip hop" sound.

I'd like to thank Slum Village for breaking the "quality group goes mainstream and sounds wack" trend. This track has a wider appeal than anything they've ever done, and it's damn good. I'm stoked for the the Villa.

I feel like Colin Munroe is quickly and somewhat improbably becoming the go-to guy for hooks. Hell, even Royce da 5'9" grabbed him for his new Bar Exam mixtape, and Colin ices this one admirably .

RIP Dilla...I had my doubts about this return, but together with another Booth-approved artist, the Village makes this work!

Young RJ has big shoes to fill-but he's getting a good start to it...

Ok I think its unanimous that Colin Munroe and Young RJ steal the show here. I'm not the biggest follower of Slum Village's material to date, so it would be unjust of me to compare this to older material. I'm diggin' this though.

Even though its kinda got a pop sound, I think its different enough to still keep the hardcore slum village fans interest. Slum Village original style still comes across in the same way over whatever beat they're on. Same with this beat. They're delivery is always smooth, and this beat is totally that. Banger!

This did have a pop vibe (like a kanye 808 on another level), but it makes it appeal to more people. The hook was real good, it wasn't too annoying like all of the latest songs have been, but good enough to make it memorable. Slum Village was fading away since they released selfish but they are back!

This is a good look for Slum Village, I think the solid verses and the beat combined allows them to get away with a more pop orientated song.
