When we featured We Out Here, Nappy Roots members Skinny & Scales’ first single as a duo, many likely recognized the title of their forthcoming LP as a reference to Gen. Sherman’s promise of 40 Akerz of land to freed slaves after the Civil War. This new cut, making its world premiere here at DJBooth.net, finds the twosome relating the famous phrase to the state of our nation in ‘09—though they acknowledge that we’ve come a long way, and are glad to have Obama in office, they still can’t help but wonder, “Where’s The Mule?”  While many artists have attempted to tackle the knotty political, social, and economic conflicts Americans are still trying to untangle in ‘09, Skinny & Scales have a better eye for the details than most, and the blend of real talk and biting humor they bring to the table result in a thought-provoking record that, thanks to the catchy, wistful hook and Sol Messiah‘s unconventional instrumental (featuring synth strings and… reversed electric guitar riffs?) is also a mellow, enjoyable listen.  Watch for 40 Akerz to hit stores sometime this summer.

First I really enjoyed the interesting production, I like the originality. For some reason it reminds me of De La, just cuz they took wierd samples and played them backward for their songs. It does sound a lil boring at times, but the song is supposed to be about the lyrics anyway. Hook is a lil boring, but its aight. Great message, I love how real the Nappy Roots always are...

Nothing from this song gets me excited. I know the subject matter is serious but their is no energy at all from the production or lyrics as they sounds way too monotone. The beat is dull and the hook doesnt sound right either. Nice message but this is too dull for me bring a little energy please. Even other dark sounding songs sound better the whole vibe of this song is just wack

Diggin: Honesty in lyricism, headphone-ready production, emotional inflection in vocals.

Not Diggin: Nothing.

Not really feeling the production on this one. Just didn't do much for me. Lyrics were on point, but just wasn't enough for me.

This has a good vibe, I like the chillin and soft production and their sexy way of singing, but I think I would fall asleep after one minute of this song...it's not my type but it's well done ;)

Kinda don't what to say about this song. It kinda sucks but the it makes up for it and then it sucks again. But it's alright. Not very enthusiastic.
