For Skillz, better known as the lyrically astute emcee whose Wrap Ups are an official part of the hip-hop calendar, being “the Wrap Up guy” has to feel like a double-edged sword. While the annual breakdowns have gained him widespread attention, he’s still searching for a record that will help him break out of that box in the national consciousness, a search that continues today with new single Call Me Crazy. Behind the boards R. Baker and Dustin “Duece” Scott lay down a bouncing, echoing and strings-hemmed beat that Skillz uses to speak slick rhymes to a particular, currently taken girl: “Let you in on some things you should know / like your beauty grows / you look better than you did ten minutes ago.” I don’t know if his romantic efforts will succeed, but having the consummately smooth Raheem DeVaughn throw down a hook definitely won’t hurt. (Note to self: hire an elite r&b singer to help me pick up women.) Will his forthcoming, aptly-titled album, The World Needs More Skillz, be the work that finally takes Skillz to the next level? We’ll find out October 12.

This is a hot record. The production is super solid, Raheem might be one of the most undervalued R&B singers in the industry, and Skillz is always entertaining on the mic.

I have to wonder, though, what this would sound like in the hands of an emcee with a slightly faster and more pronounced flow.

Yet another exceptional offering from Rah on the chorus & background vocals. This is blueprint for what a Hip Hop/R&B collaboration should sound like.

I don't want to be stereotypical, but this beat and the Raheeem hook have hook written all over them, but Skillz just doesn't have the smooth flow to match, or at least he doesn't show it here. There are very few emcees who can do what Skillz does, but it sounds like he's still working on honing his r&b collabo rhymes.
