Skillz - 2010 Rap Up
Artist: Skillz
Producer: Profound Sounds
Album: 2010 Rap Up (Single)
Label: Big Kiidz/eOne Music
First off, I just want to thank Skillz for taking 30 minutes out of what I’m sure was a hectic holiday schedule to even bless us with the 2010 Rap Up. He let us know via Twitter that he wouldn’t be recording his traditional cut for 2010, but for whatever reason he broke down and gave the people what they wanted. As usual, he touches on a little bit of everything: fashion (Lady Gaga’s infamous meat dress), world news (the Haitian earthquake) and of course, Erykah Badu’s Debbie cakes. Lyrically, he never disappoints, though his delivery this time around is a bit more relaxed than we’re used to. That paired with Profound Sounds’ minimal production makes for a (w)rap up with a little less punch than usual. I could be reaching, but I interpret that as him getting tired of the whole thing. Honestly I can’t blame him. Maybe we should show him a little more love year round instead of waiting for the holidays and begging on our hands and knees for a new song. It might just bring that spark of yesteryear back.

2010 was a big year, but somehow after listening to this new rap-up I didn't get that impression. Jessica may be right - Skillz could just be bored with the whole (w)rap up scene. Who knows? Production choice is always a big deal, though, and the Profound Sounds boardwork gets a little tired. Still, its awfully hard (no matter how fast or slow you spit) to get every noteworthy event from an entire calender year into one 5-minute record. Kudos.

This is definitely worth one listen. Like Shamir I wouldn't listen to it again. It's good for what it is, a sort-of funny reflection on a year that was... interesting.

I give this a 4-star just for the creativity and the effort Skillz still puts into this. Sure it wasn't as good as past years but I'm guessing this dude has a notebook that he writes in whenever a newsworthy event occurs, and combines them up at the end of the year. That yearlong effort alone gets my respect, and it keeps you listening from begin-end.

I've always thought Skillz benifited from the simplistic production when he does his yearly wraps up. These tracks arent about a bangin' beat, their about lyrical potentency and story telling. I personally pressed play to hear the man give his intelligent and well thought take on 2010, not to hear some obnoxious over blown instrumental by Swizz. With that said, I think Skillz is showing a little fatigue and I hope the Both provides him with features through out the year so other can listen to his talent.

Not nearly as good as past years and it sounds very rushed. At least he kept the tradition going.

This was tight as usual. His yearly wrap-ups are always on-point. He touched just about everything. Busy year in the World of hip-hop...I'm happy its a new year though personally. Bimmers Benz or Bently was my Summer joint hands down (i guess its b/c i own 2 of the 3). Anyway, BANGER!

For some reason, this rap-up isnt as good as his previous versions. It could be that there is less humor or his agression on the mic. All things considered, we got to give Skillz props for doin this year in and year out.

How many people on January 1st (including myself) were like, "Where's the rap up?!" Skillz delivered and it was as good as all the others. This series will likely die in the next few years because of Skillz feeling underappreciated the other 363 days of the year, but everyone will remember it, listen back to those songs, and revere them and what they said. Thats the definition of classic. Funny how something so time oriented can be so timeless.

I'm always excited to hear Skillz' year-end rap-up! Despite a little bit less humour this is still certainly on point. Minimalistic production works perfectly and Skillz' laid back flow is happening for me... Keep them coming Skillz

As usual, Sillz delivered. He is the king of the year end wrap up...still. Like Shamir, I probably won't listen more than once, this year...but its nice to have a quick reminder of what happened in 2010 for my kids! Classic

I have to agree with Jessica in the intro - it wouldn't be a new year with Skillz, it's always good to hear him, but he just doesn't sound as into it as usual. It's lacking that usual energy. I say this with all due love and respect for Skillz, but maybe it's time for him to hang it up if his heart's not in it anymore.

I can't front.. I was happy that he dropped it. It's kind of expected now and I think that's why I was not going to do it.. His twitter fans were buggin the hell out of him to do it. He made everyone wait a little longer than usal and then threw it on iTunes so he could make some doe. Good for Skillz.

@The 149th Are you... listening to the same track as the rest of us? Swizz didn't produce this, and the production is very minimalistic.
