While nobody’s enjoying the current economic downturn, you have to admit it has a bangin’ soundtrack (Joell Ortiz’ Bout My Money and Cam’ron‘s I Hate My Job come to mind). The latest recession-era anthem comes courtesy of a certain Baltimore soul singer. Struggling to pay her bills in the face of cutbacks at her workplace, Shiré lives in fear that her boss might come along and announce he’ll Lay Me Off. Produced by Triple A, (Don’t) Lay Me Off, in addition to touching on a current hot-button issue, further proves that Shiré isn’t about to let an A&R change her—as previously demonstrated on I Used To Lovher, she’s determined to continue marching to the beat of her own drummer. Her debut album, Pickin’ Up The Pieces, is currently set for a fall ‘09 release (by which time, hopefully, our blasted economy will be on the road to recovery).

Defintely a creative idea but its not that good. Its a little dull and this wont cut it in the industry right now if she wants to be sucessful. plain and simple

Not a single, but that isn't the aim here.
Its interesting - if Common or a dope "consensus" emcee can with a song with the same title, feel, concept and angle, everybody would laud them. But because it comes from a relatively unknown singer, I have a feel people will say this is dull, boring, and unneeded. Kudos for speaking her mind and using her craft to tell her story. Could have used a little more energy to carry the track.

@DJ Z - I thought the lack of energy was the reason why it was boring down the stretch of the song. I'm not one of those people who give the established superstars a 4 or 5 automatically. It's gotta capture my attention.

not trying to be mean but i'm a true music lover and this song is really bad and not bad meaning good the beat and the song are totally different they don't fit together at all the tempo of the song really throws me off i mostly listen to music in my car and if this came on the radio i would immediatly turn the station this Shire has a good strong voice but this is not the song for her please go to the lab and try it again because if this is your big single then you're about to flop real hard

I don't understand what some of these people are talking about on this page so far. This record is CRAZY!!!! Some if these people have been brainwashed by so much garbage being fed to them that they don't know good music anymore. Let me school u on the elements that make a good record are : great subject matter (she gets and A) we in a Damn recession y'all ; great production (Producer gets A-) and finally, great vocal performance (A+). I will stack her voice up against any of these popcorn female artist out right now!

yeah i agree with c-money the song is strong Shire' can really sing and her vocals are off the chains and the song hits a real issue that is going on today and the beat is bananas all around a great song

yeah i would have to agree with all the comments sorta i'm really feeling the title and the words that she is saying and her vocal range is awesome but the beat sorta throws this song off i'm giving it 3 stars a better beat and i think it would be 5 star material all the way well i hope my in-put helped really a better beat and this song would be radio ready

YA-BOY A.M.C sent me the link to this site to check his home girl shire out i been spining the song the did together called Believer and i been a fan of hers since hearing that and this is just another great vocal performance for her granted the beat is a little lack luster her strong voice saves this song big time so she get's the 5 stars for being a great vocalist

WOW. The ratings on this song are all over the place. I find it very interesting when you come across a song like this, because it shows you that every song is going to have its fans and its....well, non-fans. I personally am not a strong fan of this song. Not because she's not a well-known artist....just am not feeling it. I'll put it in rotation, though, cause she doin her thing. But she needs to come harder next time.
