Sean Kingston - Letting Go (Dutty Love)
Artist: Sean Kingston
Featuring: Nicki Minaj
Producer: Stargate
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: E1/Beluga Heights/Epic
Let’s be real. A certain percentage of Booth nation saw that teen heartthrob Sean Kingston had a new song with Nicki Minaj called Letting Go (Dutty Love) and skipped right past. Their loss, because what they’re missing is one of the most shocking turn-arounds in music history as Kingston delivers poignant vocals about the Israel/Palestine conflict and Nicki drops the best rhymes I’ve heard since Illmatic… sorry, I couldn’t resist. In reality, Dutty Love is everything you’d expect: omnipresent production team Stargate deliver a shining beat that Kingston uses to (of course) sing about young love, while Nicki drops another schizo, though slightly calmer than usual, flow. It’s exactly the type of catchy, hip-pop song Kingston’s been putting out since Beautiful Girls, but is that really such a bad thing? We’ll find out soon in the comments below. Fans of the cherubic J.R. Rotem protégé will just have to keep it locked for further details on Kingston’s upcoming, untitled and unscheduled album, which I feel safe assuming will contain nothing but wall-to-wall tracks like Letting Go.

I read on Twitter that Sean feels as though this is his best shot at a real successful hit single since he exploded onto the scene with "Beautiful Girls" a few years back. Hey Sean, do you know how many R&B/Pop singers would love to have charted with your "Fire Burning" record? Doh! Pickiness aside, Sean is right in that this might be his catchiest record since BG - but that doesn't make it his best.
Its formulaic (right down to the "who is hot? Oh, Nick Minaj is!" guest verse) and repetitive, but young girls and club DJs should eat it up. |

not a big fan of this guy (Fire Burning was the most annoying song of 2009) or this chick. When are people gonna realize that nicki minaj blows. Theres no doubt that this is catchy, but i still can't stand either of these artists.

Hmmm not bad, I'm still on the Nicki bandwagon so I am feelin her on this, but Sean was pretty weak. He's getting really repetitive and his beats are starting to sound the same. I'll rotate this, but it falls short of a summer favorite.

The animosity that I carry for Sean Kingston and his annoying vocals is just too much sometimes. His verses and that "Dat-De-Dat-De" thing he does in between verses is really really @*#$! annoying.
The majority of Sean's song's success is most often associated with the hook and such is the case here. Nicki Minaj was decent, but she really didn't deliver a performance that is gonna saturate in your head for more than a couple seconds after it is over with. Overall, very decent song. |

I like this, got a nice Jamaican tinge to it. Both of them delivered. I haven't liked a Sean Kingston track since Fire Burning, but this has me re-interested.

beat sounds exactly like rude boy to me, but no suprise there as stargate is producing. however, the similarity is not a bad thing. this is extremely catchy.

Fire Burning did great on the charts, but it rose quick and fell off quick. i dont think it was as successful as the charts indicate. i dont think it will be remembered at all.
anyway, im feelin the summer vibe right now. Kingston was nice rite here. i think Nicki brought this down a bit though. |

This sounds like Rude Boy 2.0 haha...I actually agree with Sean that this is his best single since 'Beautiful Girls'...i didnt like 'Fire Burning' at all. Theres not too much originality here, but the vibe is nice and breezy, so theres no doubt it should be a big summer hit....and prove Mr. Kingston's theory correct! 3.5

I agree with Co-Sign, the sound is very similar to Rihanna's Rude Boy.
This has all the right makings to become a chart topper. |

I hope I dont hear this on the radio...although on "His" song he brought the energy level up. Unlike that bow wow record he just put out.

little on the fence, my inner teenage girl (who im furiously trying to stab in the heart) is screaming omg awesome song but my rational side is saying- not again? how much longer will it take before the charts stop eating this sugary music up?

To quote Z from elsewhere, it is what it is. A formulaic hip-pop song I won't be listening to again but that a certain demographic will eat up.
On a more personal side note, I was actually waiting for someone to bring this up (because they always do), so thanks TheWiseOne. How could I give this a better rating as No Love? Because I try to view every song in terms of what they were trying to achieve. Kingston set out to make a pop record the radio will spin, and he did a pretty good job. Eminem set out to make a dope hip-hop record and (in my opinion) completely failed. When you rate every track and album on the Booth like I do, I feel like taking things on a song by song basis is the only way to accurately rate. Think about it like the movies: if you were a movie reviewer, how could you give both The Hangover and Schindler's List a thumbs up? Does that mean they're the same in terms of importance or quality? Of course not, but they both accomplish their mission (hilarious comedy/gripping drama) equally successfully. Ok, I'm done talking about me. Back to the music... |

I don't like Sean Kingston; Period. He's odd looking, his voice is too feminine, he comes off fake (has an accent in his music but in interviews he has a California accent), and he never sings anything I can relate to except that Justin beiber Song Eenie Meenie. smh. BOO! But Nicki as always blew my mind. =]

The beat on this is catchy. Sean Kingston was good on this, it kind of sounded different. Nicki Minaj was nice on this. Gonna hear this on the radio I bet.

I also don't think this is Sean Kingstons best but good effort, great pop record. I liked Nikki the best on this one. 3 stars.

I'm feeling this right here. I guess it's the Trini in my! (LOL). Anyway, I like the production here, and the new flow of Sean is refreshing. Chorus is SUPER-CATCHY. I think this is very close to BANGER status...

Nah, Sean Kingston is sinking. All his music follows the same rinse and repeat formula and it's getting way too repetitive for me.
lol yes I thought of Rude Boy immediately as well XD |

This song is just a terrible combination, the context of the song is bad enough without adding another poor Nicki Minaj verse.

At best, this is going to come off as "oh, rude boy is still playing" in the mind of listeners here in Halifax. If you think this sounds catchy, you're forgetting that it sounds like what used to sound catchy and now just sounds tired. Also, out here Nicki Minaj is completely unknown. I can't speak for other markets, but if it weren't for the RSS feeds I follow, I'd have no idea who she is either. Sorry, Sean and Stargate, but there's nothing here to earn a spot in my rotation.

Quit hatin' on Sean Kingston! I guess 99% of you guys where born into the city scene rather than the island scene. I on the other hand was born in Hawaii and the tracks Sean Kingston puts out has nice island vibes to it. Live in Jamaica for awhile then judge this track.
Don't forget that JAMAICAN born DJ Clive "Kool Herc" Campbell is credited as being highly influential in the pioneering stage of hip hop music. So correct if i'm wrong, without the help of DJ Klive "Kool Herc" Campbell [The Father Of Hip Hop Culture], who was born into the island scene, Hip Hop wouldn't of existed yet alone be the same today. Right? RESPECT the music and the people behind it. DEUCES. |

Like Z said earlier on Kelly Rowland's "Grown Woman", Stargate has fallen victim to the Swizz Beatz Syndrome of every beat sounding nearly identical.
Really annoying, considering how good they are, that Erik and Tor have to consistently use the same instruments they have been using over and over again to achieve their massive pop radio appeal. Which is exactly what this song is. Has a chance at the charts and radio if it manages to hit mainstream. |

as if people are hating this song?? Soooo Catchy! I wish it was summer here in Aus, i could go and park my car on the beach and pump this song up!! Only downside to this song is the corny part after the chorus 'what if i could get you out of these clothes...'. However the other lyrics of the song make this part dissappear.
