Sapient - Universal Diorama
Artist: Sapient
Producer: Sapient
Album: Barrels for Feathers
Label: Camobear Records
My memory might be failing me (after 22 years of long life), but I don’t think that I have had the pleasure of listening to hip-hop coming from the great state of Oregon. Whether I’ve had that geographic pleasure yet or not, from now on I’ll certainly remember Sapient, a unique producer/emcee from Portland gracing the Booth for the first time with his new single, Universal Diorama. As you might have already guessed by his unusual name, Sapient is not your average human being, or artist, on Diorama. The beat provides evidence of his boundless creativity as he laces his bars with synths, organs and sparse drums occasionally reminiscent of some ATlien’s craft work. Speaking of bars, the man’s vocal adaptability (“I can change in a blink, I am.. universal”), which alternates from slow rhymes to soft singing, should ultimately be exactly the reason this Beaver State representative is here to stay. If you found yourself intrigued by this Universal Diorama, be sure to check out Sapient’s oddly titled new album, Barrels for Feathers, available now (it dropped on August 31).

The Pacific Northwest keeps bringing its talent to the Booth (see Moxie Black, Luck-One). This one gets a little weird on the production tip, but Sapient offers a fitting performance on the vocals and the end result is pleasing. Enough to warrant a repeat visit to the Booth...

The beat on this track is sick but my favorite track off the album is Clouds Clear. Sapient is my favorite portland artist.

It is difficult to adjust your rapping skills to a beat like this. He did it well.

Its ok...the beat sounds like it could be smoothed out some more. The vocals are fine and he sounds comfortable on the record.

Love the creativity and originality, and I'm not trying to change the man's style, but this track could use a little editing. You can have a thousand great ideas, but the challenge is to pick and choose the best, and to make sure they work together.
If that sounds critical it's only because Sapient obviously has so much talent - if he can harness it a little better the man could make classics. |
