Sabrina - They Don't Know What I've Been Through
Artist: Sabrina
Producer: Paul Katsnelson
Album: No Rose Petals & Bubblebaths
Label: Hoopla Worldwide
Back in May of ‘08 we featured the Nappy Roots’ Election Day, a politically-charged record whose hook introduced our readers to rising soul starlet Sabrina. Now, we’re proud to present the world premiere of the singer’s official first single. Voice dripping with rue, Sabrina looks at the people around her and laments that They Don’t Know What I’ve Been Through (I’m not sure either, but I’ll bet you a quarter it has something to do with lost love). In addition to the artist’s jazz-influenced vocals, what stands out most about this record is Paul Katsnelson‘s production – striking a balance between musicality and radio-ready polish, he turns out a striking, complex instrumental with a lot going on both texturally and in terms of arrangement. Debut LP No Rose Petals & Bubblebaths is currently scheduled for release in the third quarter of this year; if the rest of the album is as fresh-sounding as this cut, there’s no question that there are big things ahead for Sabrina.

that1kid, I think this production is crazy! If anything, Sabrina brought the track down, but that production is nuts. Can;t get with the vocals though.

I agree with the production props, but I disagree that Sabrina brought this track down. Honestly, this entire record was impressive.
Thanks to Jonathan for the world premiere! |

She sounds like she is from one of those places where they snap there fingers when you make a good rhyme about something depressing and they through the beat from a batman arcade game behind it dont like it at all

Maybe the melody was not as good as the beat or just not proper, but don't let it misguide you: Sabrina's vocals are sweet and powerful at the same time!

Production is absolutely soundtrack ready. The vocals in this track seem like they're very cross genre. This is the type of track you hear at a trendy lounge, it's borderline rnb. But since I rather enjoy this style of music, I have to give Sabrina props, as she really injected a lot of soul into a production so odd and unique.

haven't commented in a while, but had to step in here. the production on this on is tight. Sabrina was pretty good too. Very unique and does a great job to stand out from the crowd.

I really love the base of this production, but when it gets more complex its interesting but kinda too much 4 me.
I love her vocals, classic soul feel. The song gets a lil boring to me after a while, but good enough to make rotation. |

The best thing on this is the production for me. Sabrina, imo, didn't mesh well with it. I had a hard time listening to it as well. I'll try one more time...Ok. It sounds a lil' better the second time around, but I just don't like this track.
The production gets it a 3 outta 5 |

Have to say awesome mix! love the mysterious beat. Jazzy, smooth, and with depth. Its about time for a fresh FEMALE artist with something to sing about besides diamond rings and JimmyChoos.

I like the eclectic vibe. PLEASE REPLACE THE DRUM KITS!
UGH. This song's production would have been hotter with some sharper kicks and snares. The bubbly feeling of what's there now doesn't blend with the smoothness of the vocals and the mix. Sabrina is not bad though. |
