Sabrina - Separate Ways (DJBooth.net Exclusive)
Artist: Sabrina
Producer: C Major
Album: Promo Single
Label: Hoopla Worldwide
If I were to write up a list entitled “Things I Don’t Understand About Women,” well, that would be one long list—somewhere near the top, though, would be the question, “Why do they like Journey so much?” I don’t have anything against the band, it’s just that even girls who never sing will, without fail, break into a catastrophically awful Steve Perry impression when one of their hits comes on the radio. I used to think my female friends were just strange, but even Sabrina, the rising soul starlet who premiered her debut single, They Don’t Know What I’ve Been Through, at this very site, seems to share this trait—only difference is, she can actually sing. Making its exclusive world premiere right here in the Booth, this gender-flipped cover of the group’s ‘82 smash Separate Ways has been selected as the singer’s latest promo single. Forgoing the original’s driving rock feel for a mellow, Latin-flavored guitar groove, Ca$his/Shady Records beatsmith C Major leaves Sabrina plenty of room to show off her jazzy vocal stylings; the result is a summery revamp so catchy that all those off-key passenger-seat renditions are beginning to fade from my memory—and for that, Sabrina, I can’t thank you enough.

the beat is kinda corny and idk if im really feelin her this time around either. last time i said i seen potential. i think if she could just get an OFF THE HOOK production, she could really hit the mark, but this one is just.. not cuttin it.

I love pretty much anything latin-flavored, haha, so i LOVED the production. It was just smooth, wit that chilling guitar thrown in. Sabrina's vocals were very nice on this, and the melody was supertight. This is just a great laid-back joint.

This has more of a pop appeal than R&B in my opinion, I think it has a chance at radio. Vocals could use some work, but when has that ever been held against an attractive young female artist?

She's beautiful.
This joint is really dope on an alternative/indie radio type tip. It kind've gave me the vibe of Emily King. Not bad at all. The production was nice. I hope to hear something better than this from her though. I guess I'll go check out her other music. For now, this goes into rotation, but it's missing that umph. I'll give it a 2.5 and round up. |

The beat really takes on a chill/lounge feel to it, something that belongs in a trendy martini bar. She actually sounds quite good and a solid voice compared to a lot of new rnb singers. The track is lacking in such that it isn't able to hold your attention, gets a little boring with the uninspired lyrics.
But a different sound and approach for an rnb singer, I gotta give props for that. |

Shouts to J. Hay.
Sabrina is two-for-two inside our Booth. I have never been a JOURNEY fan, so I don't have much ground to stand on as fas as comparisons are concerned. This record, however, stands on its own two very nicely. |

Eh...I'm not a fan of Journey AT ALL. So, when I hear one of their songs, and it's being sung by someone else, I can actually stand it. This is Banger, because she's got a pretty voice. It could use some work, but that really doesn't matter. Good work on this track.

So scrolling thru the list I was lookin for something different and thank you Sabrina for providin once again. First off i love journey so obviously I’m already a fan of the song...have to admit I’m probably one of those Steve Perry impersonators.
before i played this song, i had the 1983 version playing in my head, but once that Latin flavor guitar started in i knew it was gonna be hott. Journey is awesome, but Sabrina won this round. I'm gonna play it again! |

@Lfromthe5: it's a difference of opinion bro, right now you look like the hater. @that1kid13: chill, you don't have to step down to his level. |

And while we are talking about that1kid13's red suit, it reminds me of Master P's "If I Could Change" video.. Verse 2.
