Though his ‘09’s Street Hop LP earned considerable critical acclaim, Royce Da 5’9‘s recent buzz has centered around his collaborative work—first with street supergroup Slaughterhouse, and most recently with Eminem as Bad Meets Evil (whose self-titled EP drops June 14). Later this month, the Motown vet is set to parlay that renown into a raised profile on the solo tip with the release of his fifth studio album. On this new street single, Royce once again asserts his supremacy over his peers, musing that the only way he’ll see Second Place is if he runs, “a marathon backwards.” Needless to say, Royce backs up his claim with a serious demonstration of mic skills; over the legendary DJ Premier‘s tension-fraught boom-bap beat (complete with samples from KRS-One‘s The Victory, LL Cool J‘s 10 Million Stars and more), he drops bars packed from top to bottom with antisocial behavior (“I”m going yellin’ ‘Shady’ everywhere / Smackin’ n*gga’s b*tches with they lipstick and they baby with they teddy bear.”) and allusive punchlines. Think Royce is justified in titling his latest album Success Is Certain? We won’t know for sure till the project hits stores July 26, but readers are welcome to speculate…

With a new EP, LP, and group LP on the way would it be asking too much of Royce to consider recording an entire album with Premier? Maybe, but the end result would be... wow.

While the track's concept may not be exactly groundbreaking, the sheer quality of lyrics, the colorful execution of rhymes, and with DJ Premier manning the boardwork duties, there’s not much doubt that it’s going to wind up in heavy rotation.

The effortless feel of the delivery belies the exactness and meticulously measured flow and punchlines. As playful as he is ruthless in asserting his supremacy over his peers, Royce demonstrates a deliberate, expert flow and easy command of slick wordplay.

His performance may not give him mainstream light here, but around the world where that talent is appreciated, they recognize and respect the SKILLS which only confidence in your mic abilities brings.

I know it sounds hater-ish, but when ur resume with Preemo includes classic joints like "Hip Hop," "Boom" and "Shake This" you gotta come harder than this, the expectations are just way too high - or at least mine were. I have confidence Royce and Preem will bring it back to that classic ish soon enough though.

The beat is unreal. Royce's lyrics are great, and his adlibs had me rolling. This dude's quickly become one of my favorite rappers.
